Hiya Suzyq
Nice to see you join TalkingScot....hope you enjoy it!
As for your surname interests....perhaps if you provided a wee bit more info..as in a general time period or maybe some first names or something like that then folks will be able to easily tell if they can assist you further. I'm assuming your family left Scotland as some point....any idea when???
Best wishes
Jean

Hi Jean...my parents didn't leave until 1962...my Dad is from Glasgow...Gorbals??? I know the names I have are 1800's.....the names are all the same John's, Hugh's, William's....there seem to be quite a few out there but none of them seem to be part of my search. Late 1800's I think. My grandfather was born in 1915 so anything before that. I know some family came to Canada earlier but I don't know when. The only other surnames I have are Caldow and Reid. There also seems to be a lot of Agnes' in there. I have John Ronald m. Barbara Caldow 1880 in Auchinleck..parents of Hugh Ronald m. Agnes Murray Reid 1907 Glasgow
There is also a Sarah Halliday who appears to be a granddaughter??

Hi suzy
Based on John's 1881 census age and if he was just married a year before then I would assume he had been married before. Remember that relationships are stated to the head of household so wee Sarah is his granddaughter most likely. You could search on a female RONALD to a male HALLIDAY and see what comes up! You could also search for the birth of wee Sarah and see who her parents were...either way should find you a daugher of a previous marriage of John's. (And yes just to confirm the MC does indeed state John was a widower at his 1880 marriage to Barbara! )

John RONALD M 46 M Cumnock, Ayr, Scotland

Barbara RONALD M 38 F Auchinleck, Ayr, Scotland

William RONALD 3 M Auchinleck, Ayr, Scotland
Rel: Son
Janet RONALD 1 F Cumnock, Ayr, Scotland
Rel: Daur
Sarah HALLIDAY 1 F Cumnock, Ayr, Scotland
Rel: Grand Daur
Ok then so then off to view the MC just mentioned from 1880 and obtain Barbara's parents names. Then off to the IGI to find their marriage:
1. JOHN CALDOW - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Marriage: 30 APR 1841 Auchinleck, Ayr, Scotland
Spouse: Margaret HALL
So now you can see you can search the census returns for John and Margaret from 1841 right up til 1881 and note their children. Since Barbara states her father was dead then search for his death and it's easily found in 1878 at age 68 in AUCHINLECK /AYR on Scotlands People website. (Link at top of the forum above to access the pay per veiw site). Knowing mom was still living when she married then a search on the 1881 census for her turns up this very likely suspect (note the address is same as the one John died at).

Unfortunately the IGI does not seem to be helpful in turning up any results for a parent search but the BIVRI looks more promsing. I think you'll find this is your Barbara and some or perhaps all of her siblings. You can compare the names and ages to your census findings to prove this.

1. JAMES RONALD - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Marriage: 06 MAY 1825 Cumnock, Ayr, Scotland

Hope this is helpful so you can better see some ways you can link these people together so perhaps they will fit into your tree!

Thanks Jean, I think my biggest problem is that I'm not really sure how o search through any of these sites and I'm trying to do as much as possible for free. It's very expensive to become a member of any of the sites. I also don't have any dates really and the only family I have access to are my Dad and his 3 sisters and they all have horrible memories. I don't even know how to find IGI??? let alone how to look things up. I do appreciate your help though. Another lady helped me to get the names Caldow and Reid when she went to the National Registry house??Hopefully I can find something with the info you've given me.
Thanks
Thanks

Hi Suzy
I'm really sorry but we cannot help with queries about people who may still be living. The people you have mentioned above are too recent for us to be able to help with.

Note that wee Sarah was actually Sarah Halliday RONALD, the illegitimate child of Elizabeth RONALD, the eldest daughter of John RONALD and Barbara CALDOW.JustJean wrote: Dwelling: Tower Street

Without looking at the original 1881 microfilm, not clear if this was an error in the original census, or a later transcription/indexing error.
