Kelly surname from Foveran, Aberdeenshire.....

Post by puffin » Sat Apr 16, 2005 3:07 pm

On my father's mother's line her maiden name has the Kelly surname which I have traced back some three generations to the late 18th century when my 3G Grandfather Alexander Kelly was married on 27/5/1790 in Foveran.
His son William Kelly ( 1807-1880 ) and grandson Alexander Kelly ( 1856 -1933 ) were also both born in Foveran although the grandson later moved to Leith where he raised his family including his daughter my grandmother Helen Wilson Kelly, who died in 1919 just 19 months after my father was born.
I have located the grave of Helen and her parents in Rosebank cemetery in Leith but apart from that have little knowledge of the origins of this Kelly family.
In the Foveran area there are several Kelly families in the late 18th and through the 19th century.
Can anyone help in answering whether the Kelly name in this area ( Foveran and Newburgh ) has come originally from Ireland, and if so in what era ? or may it be associated with othe Kelly ( or Kellie ) names with longer scottish origins ?
I had noted that just a few miles upriver from Newburgh on the Ythan near Methlick there are properties with the Kellie name associated to these, and I believe the Kellie name was once included in the titles of the the Earls of Aberdeen and their families.

If anyone has any suggestions for how I might explore this further these would be most appreciated.

Yes it looks as though this might be him, he married a Mary Hutcheon later in 1881, on 19th July 1881, at Commonty, New Deer.

On my record I have him as a quay labourer, a policemen and also a Railway Goods Station Supervisor.

With Mary he had five children :-
Charlotte Kelly born 1883, William Kelly born 1885, Mary Kelly born 1888, Helen Wilson Kelly born 1890 ( my grandmother ) , and Alexander Kelly born 1893.

Thanks

You had posted a request for information regarding the Kellys from Leith - in particular re your grandmother Helen W. Kelly (daughter of Alexander Kelly and Mary Hutcheon). We are direct decendants of Charlotte Kelly (your grandmothers sister) and Rennie Noble. Charlotte and Rennie immigrated to Canada (Vancouver) and had six children - all deceased. My sister and I are the daughters of Charlottes youngest daughter Alma. We would love to contact you directly.

Regards,
Cathy Kelly
