James Gibb died Boddam 28 Sep 1912 age 73
DC parents given as John Gibb / Ann Carsner. Informant son in law.
MC parents given as John Gibb / Ann Cassnie both deceased. He married Margaret Hird in New Deer in 1872. He was 33.
Their first child was named Bathia Ann Cassnie Gibb.
Have done a surname search on SP for both Cassnie and Carsner but it comes up no results.
Have found James on 1881 census - birthplace Ellon and on 1891/1901 his birthplace is Methlick.
Found possible on 1851 age 11 with parents John and Ann in Methlick but birthplace is Fyvie.
Right - now my problem is I can't find his birth which should be 1839ish and what on earth is his Mums name? There is no clue from his 6 kids as they haven't used naming patterns.
Anybody got some bright ideas?
Paula

Hi Paula
How is leafy Bucks just now? On the IGI there is a Charles Gibb born 26 May 1833 to John Gibb and Ann Casmuth and also a John Gibb born 15 July 1823 to the same couple. Don't know if that is of any help to you. I can't see a birth for your James. I can't see a marriage for these parents I'm afraid. Not sure if this gets you any further.

Hi Anne,
Thanks for your suggestions. John born 1823 sounds perfect except he is about 16 years too old. Going by the census I've found his age remains constant so must have been born 1839. I'm totally stumped by this one
Btw did a surname search on SP for Casmuth and nothing comes up for that either.
Hopefully someone else might have some inspiration.

Hi
At work right now so can't take time to search this one out....just wondered if the possible one you found on the 1851 census was with his family? I mean.... Did he have siblings? If yes it would be worth tracking forward any of those to see what they state as their mother's name at marriage or death. Choose the most unusual given name to search forward of course just to narrow up the choices!!....
Is it possible it's CASSIE? There are 3 of them on the 1841 census in Fyvie...but all age 15 so probably not from the same family!!!
Hmmm.....will keep thinking

Hi Jean,
The 1851 James in Methlick is with his family age 11 and parents John 50 master mason and Ann 44. Unfortunately no siblings which doesn't help at all!
You could well be right about Cassie. Hadn't thought of that and he could well have been born with his mums family in Fyvie.
Will have a look at the 1841.
Thanks,
Paula

Re: James Gibb
Hello Paula,
James' parents' deaths help only a little. Ann died 1864 in Methlick, but the informant was a neighbour, who said that Ann was the illegitimate daughter of Mary Ogilvie. John's death in 1871, also in Methlick, had his deceased wife as Ann Casnie. However, the informant was grandson-in-law, so not especially close to the family.
Regards,
John

Hello John,
This is great news - have looked at Johns death in 1871 and although it doesn't help with Ann at least I have got Johns parents and from IGI his 5 siblings. Thank you so much for that
Also informant on Johns DC must mean James had a sister so I'm off to try to find her marriage!
Thanks again
Paula
