Please Help.....
Desperatly seeking (NEEDING ) help here
I have been looking for info on Stewart Hughan for over 2 years now.
I know he was born around 1823-1828 Dumfries possibly Kircudbright.
I only know this as i got his marraige too Elizebeth Campbell in 1846 but it doesn't state who his parents are .
He had 8 children all born in and around Kircudbright. I also know he died between 1871 - 1885 but cannot find a death for him.
I feel i am at a dead end here and if i could only find out who his parents were i could move on further.
Hopefully someone can help

Stewart and the following people are all listed together and each of their records include:
Household: View other family members
Civil Parish: Kirkmabreck
County: Kirkcudbrightshire
Address: St John St
Parish Number: 873
There is no explanation of what connection there is between the persons listed, nor is there a list of abbreviations. I’d guess F S is a farm servant, but no guesses for M S.

The 1841 Census for Scotland - 6 June 1841. There is a note to this census saying that ages 15+ years are rounded down to the nearest 5 year mark, so someone who was 19, could actually be listed as 15, due to the rounding down.

The abbreviations used in the 1841 census were given on the enumerators' instructions. These can be found transcribed on the TalkingScot Census pages.
http://www.talkingscot.com/censuses/census-1841.htm
F.S. = Female Servant
M.S. = Male Servant
On that basis, Stewart, the male at the top of the list is listed as a female servant.
All the best,

I have sat and went through all my paper work & documents. I have Stewarts marraige in 1846 , also on the 1861 , 1871 census I can't find him or elizebeth for 1881 census. Stewart may have been dead by then he was still alive in 1869 but on the death of his son in 1871 it has stewart down as deceased. On his wife Elizebeths death in 1885 also states Stewart deceased so it sort of narrows down the search margin. But still i just can't find any death on him

Hi Maddy
Not sure if this is any help, but there is a Stewart Heu*han (spelling arrived at by trial & error, staring with wildcards and adding letters to retain result of one death!!) died in 1873 (birth 1825+/- 5yrs), but does not seem to be in Dumfries area - its in Midlothian. Can't check as don't have any current credits...
Best wishes
Lesley
p.s. ...and that * is not a "g"!! But it is one letter as "?" works equally well...Goodness knows what is is
- if you find out, please put me out of my misery!!
later: blooming heck - its a "C"!!
Surname is Heuchan Sounds similar to what you are looking for....

Hi Kath/Maddy
Just goes to show the power of a wildcard or two - always worth trying, especially with names which may have been unusual and so often misheard and/or mis-spelt.
I'm really pleased I could help - that's great!!
Was the informant kind enough or knowledgeable enough to give you his parents' names on the death entry? I do hope so!
Best wishes
