help me please.....

Post by zero » Fri Oct 20, 2006 4:47 pm

Please can you help me.

I know that my great grand father was James George Gauld(possibly more middle names) and that he was married to Isabella Coutts. They lived in Aberdeen and apparently he was a Stonemason(?? family business) Their youngest child <name edited to protect privacy of the living> is now 82 she was the youngest of at least 9 children: <edited> of these i Know two <edited> are still alive in <edited>. Can anyone help me with my family tree I know nothing of the roots of Isabella Coutts and James Gauld

<Hi zero- sorry about all the edits, but we try to respect the privacy of the living here on Talking Scot, as I'm sure you will appreciate. See http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6601
But we are more than happy to help you move backwards in you family tree! Oh, and...a warm welcome to Talking Scot :D

Hi Zero,

Welcome to Talking Scot!

You could view and download your Gt. grandparents marriage certificate at http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

It's a pay per view site and works on the basis of buying credits. The minimum amout is £6.00 and for this you get 30 credits. Once registered you can do free searches to try and narrow down the dates.

The cut off time for marriages is 1930 so as <edited to protect the privacy living persons>is their youngest child, they must have married well before this.

There are a good few posts on this site giving good advice on how to maximise when using Scotland's People so it would be worthwhile having a look through these before delving in.

Good Luck!

Anne

Hi Zero
A look at the free search on Scotland's People suggests that there was a James Gauld & an Isabella Coutts married in St Nicholas district, Aberdeen in 1900. If this is your couple, the marriage entry will give you both the ages they gave at the time of their marriage, their given occupations and both sets of parents, so you will be well on your way to finding out more.

If you need any help in finding or downloading the marriage, just shout!

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Zero
No problem with the editing. :D Not to worry - happens quite often on here when folk are tying to give as much detail as they can, they forget completely that some of the people they are mentioning might still be alive.
I'm very glad to hear you have made some progress, that's great - if you need any help or get stuck, we'll be only too happy to help you out. :D

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Zero,

Any chance when you traced your Gaulds back that they originated in Glenbuchat/glenbucket, Aberdeenshire. One of my clan married a William Gauld there and I also have Coutts connections from Crathie?

If not, happy huntin' anyway!

Regards

Tish

Hi Tish,

Is this one of your Coutts: John Coutts (1884-1975) born 13-Feb-1884 Cairnagiehouse(?), Crathie to Peter Coutts (general labourer) and Jane Coutts (ms. Lamond). He married Agnes Paterson in 1909 in Wilkieston (Ratho, Midlothian registration distict). He died in Wilkieston (registered in East Calder) in 1975.

All the best,

AndrewP
