Hi Brodie,

Any connection with yours?

Welcome
Thanks for the welcome Lesley.
Although I'm new to this site, I'm certainly not new to amateur genealogy - I've been researching my own family for more than 20 years and have done trees for many friends and in-laws.
I have several ongoing pieces of work outwith my own tree, including acting as go-between for people in Canada and Australia whom I have linked through two mysterious Perthshire families with a colourful history, and also following the fortunes of four families of 18th century Irish immigrants through the Gorbals in Glasgow and into West Lothian where they eventually join up. Both can be described as flustrating but fun - I think!
My 'speciality' is the area around Longside in Aberdeenshire but I have a mountain of information squirreled away about a variety of Aberdeenshire, Banffshire and Kincardine families. My data bank about the parish of Uig on Lewis is also fairly big. So if anyone thinks I can help, please ask! I have a huge address book of contacts all over the world and lots of them owe me favours so if I don't know something, chances are I'll know a man who does!

Hi Brodie,
Some of your Aberdeenshire names interest me. I've traced many of the descendants of Peter Mitchell (d.1839) and Mary Bowman (d.1835) of Crathie, Aberdeenshire. Peter was previously married to Anne Duncan who died I suspect around 1800. They had two children John (b.?) and Mary (b. 1798). Mary had no issue and I don't know anything about John. Any connection?

Mitchells
Hi Tish. My Mitchells begin with my GGG Grandfather Alexander Mitchell who married my GGG Grandmother Janet Gauld in Auchindore & Kearn in 1804. They had at least 5 children - Alexander, Helen, Isabel, William and my GG Grandfather Thomas Mitchell. The family moved to Alford at some stage and then on to Lumphanan where Thomas married Elizabeth Reid in 1846.
Thomas and Elizabeth had 3 children - Isabella, Peter and Alexander - Isabella was my G Grandmother and married into the Lumphanan Kemps in 1884.
So I don't see any connection at the moment - unless you have some of these Mitchells in your records?

Shewans
Sorry Paula - I can't see an obvious link. My primary Shewan is my GGG Grandmother Margaret, born in 1764 daughter of Andrew Shewan and Jane Johnstone of Buthlaw. The only possibility (unless we go way back in time) would be if your Shewans were descendants of Margaret's only brother John. He married Elizabeth Smith about 1808 and lived at St Fergus. He had 6 sons and although I have traced loads of the descendants of these boys, I certainly don't have them all. One of them had 12 children!PaulaD wrote:Hi Brodie,

Hi Brodie,
thanks for that. I don't see any connection either even having included your Gaulds which also figure in my tree. I should have said that Peter Mitchell and Mary Bowman had at least 10 children and I have traced many of their ancestors though not all. They look like the same generation as yours and unless your Alexander had a brother Peter, I can't see a connection. That said I've never figured out where this Peter came from except he shows up in Crathie around 1798 and has loads of children!
Happy hunting
