Marriage in Scotland between 1966/77

Hi

Some very nice people on rootschat told me to come here as I have a question about a possible marriage at Gretna Green, and they said that the people on this site are extremely helpful.

Ok rumour has it that my grandparents married somewhere "quiet" between 1966/1977 and they are not on the England or Wales records. My mum did have the marriage certificate up to a couple of years ago but before I was researching and threw it away when my Grandma died, not knowing I was going to be doing my family tree, so I know they definitely got married.

Does anyone know anywhere I could find out the details of their marriage please? Is there anywhere I could find out just the year would be ok. Any help gratefully received.

Dee the only way I know of to find that information is to go to New Register House in Edinburgh as those records are still 'closed' for access on an open forum like the internet as the people could still be alive.

If your grandmother married in 1966.........you must be one of our youngest members.

My Nana married when they had both retired. No one knew they were not married, apart from my mum who found out at about the age of 18, that's why they "sneaked off somewhere quiet"!

I wish I was one of the youngest members!

Hi Dee,

Life is so different in this day and age. No shame nowadays in having children and not being married.

I think it's great that your grandparents finally got married, such a shame though that they didn't have the family there with them.
