Help with old Photos

Post by sheilajim » Tue Oct 31, 2006 10:20 pm

Hi Everyone

My mother lost all the photos of her family in Scotland, so I never got to see what my grandparents looked like. :(

I got lucky last month when I was contacted by a person who saw my listings on Genes Reunited. It turned out that she was the wife of a distant relation. Her husband's mother and my mother shared the same grandparents. She e-mailed me a picture of her mother-in-law's mother, who was my grandmother's sister. :D (I hope that I am making this clear).

You can't imagine how thrilled I was to get this photo. :D I am trying to date it. I am wondering if this picture of my grandmother's sister could have been taken when she was married in 1898.

I have uploaded the picture to the Gallery, and would like the opinion of the good People on TS.

I am also trying to upload a picture of my mother taken in 1930, to see if anyone but myself, can find some family resemblance. :-k

Thanks

Sheila

Hi All

Thanks for the uploaded picture of my grandmother's sister. I am trying to upload the 1930 picture of my mother, but for some reason it won't upload.

Hi sheila,

It certainly looks like a wedding photo but I am not good at dates. There is a lady over at Rootschat on their photo restoration board http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?board=298 who is a conservator and is very good at dating photos. Her name is her user name is PrueM. However a lot of those there seem to have expertise at dating photos.

Good luck!

Hi Nina

I think that it could be a 1898 wedding photo too. The reason that I asked is that I thought that only rich people wore wedding dresses in those days. My ancestors were not rich, but my great grandmother and one of her daughters were dressmakers. I suppose that one, or both of them could have made the dress.

I will try rootschat, a little later.

Hi Nina

Thanks for sending me to RootsChat. They seem to think that this is a wedding dress too.

Best of all, they improved the image of the photo. I now have a better photo than I had before. [woohoo]

Thanks again Nina,

Sheila
