Hi Roary and Welcome to TalkingScot!

I thought your search might be an easy one with a name like Oscar and birth in 1903 but alas I don't find one immediately. Can you spare any more details at all? A quick search for marriages between William Douglas and Sarah Anyone within the 1880 - 1904 time range give 4 possible hits. Two in Fife, one in Angus and one in Midlothian. The 1881 Census gives a possible 91 William Douglas born between 1860-1870 and living in the Scottish lowlands. Out of these 91 candidates two happen have to have B as a middle initial but they were born Greenock and Stranaer. Any idea if William and Sarah had other children? Did Oscar die in Scotland? Would love to help you but need something else to go on....

Hi again roary and thanks Heather for that tip.

I've been puzzling this one up one side and down the other and it is quite a mystery. Nothing quite fits but there are a few observations that may or may not be helpful. First of all unfortunately I've managed to eliminate the 2 William B. Douglas in Scotland 1881 census from the running. One's middle name is Bell and the other is Bruce.

I'm assuming now that your Oscar DOUGLAS was born in Chorlton, Lancashire in the June quarter of 1903. In case you don't have his BC the Vol is 8C and page 838 and this can be ordered. A closer inspection of Chorlton yields quite a few DOUGLAS vital records not the least of which are other Oscars. There is a:

Marriage Dec quarter 1859
Death Dec quarter 1872
Birth Sep quarter 1874
Birth Mar quarter 1878
Death Dec quarter 1882

and these are just on the name Oscar DOUGLAS in Chorlton District Lancashire. I wonder if your William DOUGLAS had existing family connections in Lancashire....or even if his own parents had been born in England and then went to Scotland for his birth.

There doesn't seem to be a logical marriage for William and Sarah in England. A search of the 1901, 1891, and 1881 census in England for William DOUGLAS is pretty inconclusive as well. No one seems to jump out as a likely suspect altho there are several that could bear further tracking.

Do you have any clues as to what William's occupation was?

Really sorry I haven't been of more help....

Jean
