Billy McNeil's mother

Post by mcblondie » Mon Nov 06, 2006 4:26 pm

Hi can anyone tell me who Billy McNeill's (Celtic) mother was/is? I know she was Lithuanian, but does anyone know what her name was.

(and no wisecracks like Mrs. McNeill. lol)

You're probably going to have to get someone to look up his birth register entry, - March 2, 1940, - in N Lanarkshire.

I haven't read his autobiography however I had a flick through it to see what he said about my hame toon of Bellshill. I am sure he definately mentions his Lithuanian connections in it and his family name, so you could go into a book shop and take a look.

His mother actualy lived next door to one of my school friends on Motherwell Road.

It's almost 10 years since this post on Billy McNeil's mother. My mother knew her as Nelly Smith, both pupils at St Brides, Bothwell. According to mother, she was Polish but like many her surname was adapted. She was a member of the 'Poles Corner' in the playground, a high status place, where girls of Polish and Lithuanian descent played. They were terrific seamstresses, apparently. I take a silly pride from this remote connection to Celtic's great captain.
