HOGG< DONALD & DUTHIE-Need help.....

Post by cos » Wed Nov 29, 2006 4:48 am

:?: I am new to Talking Scot so please bare with me while I give a background to my query for help. I am researching family of George HOGG- and the following is what I know.He married Margaret DUNCAN 15/12/1792 in Dunfermline, Fife. They had the following issue- Jean b 1794, Elisabeth 1795, James 1797, Laurence 1799, William 1802, Ann 1804, Margaret 1807, Christian 1810 & Sebastian 1813: all born Dunfermline,Fife
My line comes from Laurence's (m. Elspeth DENHOLM 1827) son George who migrated to Australia with wife Helen KINGHORN & 2 sons Peter & Lawrence abt 1857-58.They had 3 more sons in Victoria,Aust. -John, George & David.
I have a copy of George's will (1824) he died 1826. I haven't any knowledge of his birth, parents or siblings, or age at death. In his will he is descibed as 'Esquire of Shannaburn' and he bequeathed money to various charities and several relatives. His 2nd cousins Janet DONALD & her children John, Ann & George DONALD also their aunts Jean & Margaret DONALD: his 3rd cousins Susan, Catherine, Alexia & William DUTHIE.
Can anyone tell me where Shannaburn is? I know its near Aberdeen. Also can anyone help with how the DONALD's & DUTHIE's actually connect? Also any help re George's & Margaret's births, parents etc.

Hi cos

Today, I don't have the leisure to take a closer look at your query.

However I would like to say "A warm Welcome to Talking Scot."

I do hope you'll get lots of help from the site.

Best wishes

Hi cos,
Awfy sorry can't help on your names, but this could be Shannaburn.
If you go to one of these NLS pages -
--
http://www.nls.uk/maps/early/os_scotlan ... index.html
or
http://www.nls.uk/maps/early/os_scotlan ... _list.html
--
Select Sheet 77 Aberdeen
(to zoom in on an area you just need to left click on the mouse)
Zoom in to the pink area at the bottom of the map, where it says Maryculter PH. on the white border.
Just to the right of the vertical line is Greenloaning and going north from there is
Auchlunies, Hillhead, Home Farm, and then Shannaburn.

Hope it's the right one!

Hi Cos

I had a go at the Duthies - searching the IGI for Alexia ( or similar ) Duthie gives only 6 results, 4 of whom are in too late a time frame, and the other 2 are the same person : Alexandrina Davidson Duthie. I think she might be your Alexia :

I actually started with the 1851 Census from Ancestry :
At Anne Street

Name Parent or spouse names Estimated birth year Birthplace Relation Civil parish County
Mary Combe abt 1827 Fetteresso, Kincardine Servant Fetteresso Kincardineshire House Servant
Alexandrine Davidson abt 1785 Fetteresso, Kincardine Visitor Fetteresso Kincardineshire Interesr Of Money
Catherine Duthie abt 1773 Fetteresso, Kincardine Sister Fetteresso Kincardineshire Interesr Of Money
Susan Duthie abt 1767 Fetteresso, Kincardine Head Fetteresso Kincardineshire Propretrice Of House & Mary

Then found on the IGI ,

Batch C112584 , Born to William Duthie and Margaret Duthie*
1. ALEXANDRINA DAVIDSON DUTHIE - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 25 JUN 1783 Fetteresso, Kincardine, Scotland

2. JOHN DUTHIE - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 16 OCT 1778 Fetteresso, Kincardine, Scotland

Batch C112554, Father William Duthie, no mother mentioned :
SUSANNA DUTHIE - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 04 OCT 1767 Dunnottar, Kincardine, Scotland
same batch
CATHARINE DUTHIE - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 18 MAY 1772 Dunnottar, Kincardine, Scotland
WILLIAM DUTHIE - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 11 JUN 1769 Dunnottar, Kincardine, Scotland

There are other births with father WIlliam Duthie in Batch C112554

Alxandrina's marriage on the IGI :
ALEXANDRINA DAVIDSON DUTHIE - International Genealogical Index
Spouse: ROBERT DAVIDSON Family
Marriage: 29 MAR 1813 Nigg, Kincardine, Scotland M112664

* Not found marriage of a William Duthie to Margaret Duthie, did find one to a Margaret Davidson in 1762 ?

Moving on to the 1861 census :
Alexandrina Davidson aged 76,occupation fundholder born Fettersso, is at 20 Anne Street, Stonehaven, Fetteresso with a housemaid and a cook.
No sign of Catherine and Susan
There is another interesting entry on the page , which will I mention at
the bottom :

Here's the 1841 Census:

At Ann Street

View Record Alexandrina Davidson abt 1791 Kincardineshire, Scotland Fetteresso Kincardineshire 258
View Record Catherine Duthie abt 1781 Kincardineshire, Scotland Fetteresso Kincardineshire 258
View Record Susan Duthie abt 1771 Kincardineshire, Scotland Fetteresso Kincardineshire 258
View Record William Duthie abt 1776 Kincardineshire, Scotland Fetteresso Kincardineshire 258
View Record Jessie Fox abt 1821 Kincardineshire, Scotland Fetteresso Kincardineshire 258

Jessie is an F.S. The others are IND(ependant means )
The ages in the 1841 census were rounded down - in this case more than they ought to have been I think.

All 4 of these Duthies may have left wills ;

From ScotlandsPeople :

Duthie William 29/07/1846 Esquire,
residing at Stonehaven Inventory Stonehaven Sheriff Court SC5/41/11

Duthie Catherine 31/07/1852 Miss, residing in Stonehaven Inventory Stonehaven Sheriff Court SC5/41/13
(5 pages)
Duthie Catherine 20/09/1853 Miss, residing in Stonehaven Additional Inventory Stonehaven Sheriff Court SC5/41/13
(3 pages )

Duthie Susan 28/08/1852 Miss, residing in Stonehaven Inventory Stonehaven Sheriff Court SC5/41/13
(5 pages)

Davidson Alexandrina 16/02/1870 Mrs, alias Duthie, widow of Robert Davidson esq., of Balnagask, residing in parish of Fetteresso Inventory; Trust Conveyance and Settlement Stonehaven Sheriff Court SC5/41/22 (25 Pages)

I think they were comfortably off -
See NE Scotland Genealogy Website
http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/nescotland/a ... onhiv2.htm

GENTRY !

So every likelihood of tombstones for this family - there are some on the aforementioned website, which is full of good stuff.

Perhaps a trawl through any published MI's for the area may yield some clues. Perhaps the Aberdeen & North-East Scotland Family History Society http://www.anesfhs.org.uk/ may be able to help ?

No proof yet that these are you Duthies - but given the lack of Alexia Duthies and that this one has the correct brothers and sisters , I feel quite hopeful.

I wonder who Alexandrina left her money to. I didn't find any children -
and her sisters don't appear to have married . Up to you whether you decide to view the will.

FInally , going back to the 1861 census at Ann Street :

On the qame page , but not same household is an
ALEXANDER DONALD , pensioner born about 1796 Durris, Kincardine .
plus family
This may be his christening :

ALEXANDER DONALD
Christening: 14 AUG 1795 Durris, Kincardine, Scotland
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Parents:
Father: JAMES DONALD Family
Mother: HELEN MENIE
C112565

Other children that come up for this couple
1. DONALD - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 20 MAR 1803 Durris, Kincardine, Scotland

2. WILLIAM DONALD - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 21 OCT 1793 Durris, Kincardine, Scotland

3. CHARLES DONALD - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 01 APR 1797 Durris, Kincardine, Scotland

4. ALEXANDER DONALD - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 14 AUG 1795 Durris, Kincardine, Scotland

5. ROBERT DONALD - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 03 APR 1801 Durris, Kincardine, Scotland

And their parents marriage registered in 2 parishes:

International Genealogical Index / British Isles -

1. JAMES DONALD - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Marriage: 09 SEP 1788 Drumoak, Aberdeen, Scotland

2. JAMES DONALD - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Marriage: 09 SEP 1788 Durris, Kincardine, Scotland

This one may be a coincidence - I mention it only in case there is some link atht can be proven afterwards......

Hi grannysock
WOW! Many many thanks-yes Duthie family do look like the ones I have been looking for. I will go to other links as you suggest. What you found connects to other persons who received bequests from George -Davidsons especially; Christian Davidson ( Mrs Alexander FRAZER) was one.
On Scotlands People I found Janet HOGG married John DONALD (possible parents of those mentioned) 1769 Lanark & Robert HOGG m. Isobel DUTHIE 1798 Durris. Need to do more research to find the missinfg piece of the puzzle. Once again many many thanks for your help I really appreciate it.
