Scottish Divorce.....

Post by ASGROOMBRIDGE » Sun Apr 24, 2005 3:41 pm

How can I find out if my grandparents Andrew McGowan born 9/4/1884 and Mary Jane Semple 10/10/1885 and married 31/10/1914
at 19 Howard Street Glasgow ever got divorced. They seperated around 1920. :?: :?

If they were divorced in Scotland, or elsewhere and the info passed back to Scotland, then there will be an annotation on the 1914 marriage register entry to the effect that there has been a divorce.

It should be possible to check this by looking at the image of the 1914 marriage register entry on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, - what you are looking for is an oval stamp in the normally blank extreme LH column with the words "divorce" and other info in it.

But just to complicate life, if the divorce took place outside Scotland, there's no guarantee that this will show up on the 1914 marriage register entry.

The separate Register of Divorces in Scotland didn't start until 1984.

David, Thank you for that I have a copy of the registration as well as marriage certificate so it looks as though they never divorced.

Thanks again

But have you looked at the on-line image?, as the information on the divorce would have been added some time later (obviously  ), or did you obtain the copy in the last few years?

David, Checked it today just in case I had missed something. I have 7 pages worth of registrations on Scotlands people.
Dont know what to look for next. Have a look at my last posting I have hit a brick wall.

Thanks again,
Audrey :? :? :?
