Rutherford Family Help

I am looking for some help tracing an Andrew Rutherford and Mary Wright. This is the second time writting this as the last one I tried to type the browser crashed.

Anyways. I am having trouble with these two people as I cannot find a marriage certificate for them. The had three kids - Daniel, Janet and John. John was born 1838 and Daniel, 1836. Both in Airth, Stirlingshire.

Another problem with them is that both their death certificates have no parents on them. Andrew died in Glasgow in 1864 and had no wifes name on the cert. In the census records he appears to be moving about Glasgow working away from his wife and kids. He was a Blacksmith.

Mary died in 1885 in Stirlingshire and is widowed to Andrew and her son John signs the DC. No parents or cause of death is mentioned.


I am also having trouble locating Births for them. Andrew says he was born in Fossoway(?), Perthshire in the census records and born around 1810. As for Mary she may have been born around 1802 in Kincardine, Perhshire.



Can anyone help me with them please?

The three children appear on the online IGI as follows. These are all records extracted from the OPRs.

JANET RUTHERFORD - Birth: 26 APR 1836 Airth, Stirlingshire
JOHN RUTHERFORD - Birth: 02 AUG 1838 Airth, Stirlingshire
DANIEL RUTHERFORD - Birth: 17 MAY 1840 Airth, Stirlingshire

The 1841 census index shows the parents and 4 children in Airth. In addition to the above there is 7 year old Chirstian (note spelling - or mis-spelling?). Unfortunately there is no image available.

By the 1851 census, mother and Daniel are in Stenhousemuir (Larbert parish). This confirms the information that you have showing her birthplace as Kincardine. An Andrew Rutherford, blacksmith, lodging in Gorbals, Glasgow matches the details you have given, showing Fossoway, Perthshire as his birthplace.

There are 30 records for Mary Wright born 1802 +/- 10 years, but not identified as Perthshire.

There are also additional Andrew Rutherfords in the same time frame, but no sign of a marriage registry.

This, of course, doesn't help clarify his or her parents. The possibility of a Memorial Inscription is still there especially if her family had a lair. Less likely for him although Glasgow is not too far away for him to be transported back home.
I'm surprised at the lack of 'cause of death' information.
At least you know which parish she died in to try and pin down a possible graveyard.

There must be a way round this. The English records don't appear to have much more than you have yet some people manage to break down the walls.
Maybe you should let this one fester for a while then come back to it with either inspiration or desperation !

The Kincardine Mary was from was not Kincardineshire, but Kincardine, Perthshire (around Blair Drummond - Safari Park nowadays).

Do you have Mary on the 1861 census ?
I've just had a look at the Ancestry index ( thanks Angel for the tip on the Research Sources forum) - and found these people living at Stenhousemuir:

Now I'm not sure if this is one or two families ( William senior is unlikely to be a "house" and more likely to be a "head" ! ) .
Anyway my thought was that if Christina was actually Mary's sister , then perhaps when she ( Christina ) died, someone remembered her parents names ?

Thanks all you have been very helpful. This is one line I left a while ago because it was doing my head in so I have decided to come back to it.

If I remember right I couldnt get the 1851 census for John Rutherford as there was no image

I already have dates and marriages for the kids.

Thanks for reminding me to check the 1861 census. I do not have the image on my computer but I do on SP. I checked it again and Mary (Head) is living with her sister, Christina/Christian who is widowed. Mary is 58 and from Kincardine, Perthshire. Her sister is a Dairy Maid. They were in Stenhousemuir.


Where is Redrogart? Is it near Fossoway?

HELP!

Trying to find my 2nd great grandfather John Rutherford born 13 OCT 1829 in Forgandenny, Perthshire, Scotland and his 2 sons on the 1861 census and cant find them anywhere. His 2 sons were both born in Perth John 1857 and David 1859 at 13 Paul street at the home of their mother Mary's parents. John senior never married their mother Mary Speedie. Recently began thinking that perhaps John was already married. Mary Speedie was born 19 march 1837 in Perth. I have found her on the 1861 census living with her parents, but no sign of her sons or their father. Also trying to find a death for John senior to complete my tree. Any help would be appreciated.
