Try as I might I can't fathom this one out.
Right - Thomas Hislop married Sarah Bonner 15 Feb 1884
So far the children I have found are
Rose Ann born 1885
Sarah Jane born 1887
William 1889
Katie born 1890
James Born 1892 (my husbands grandfather)
The only ones that I can find in 1901 census are Sarah who is living with her aunt, uncle and grandfather, and Katie who is in the Glasgow City Poorhouse.
Now this is where it gets interesting - pull up a pew.
In 1896 there is another daughter born to Sarah Bonner - Rebecca, but on Rebecca's birth cert is states under parents "Thomas MCLEAN (!!!) and Sarah Bonner wife of Thomas Hislop (coal Miner) who she declares is not the father of this child and further that she has had no personal communication with him since they ceased to reside together in Septemeber 1892"
There is another daughter born to them - Jeanie McLean, but I can't find her birth cert (I have tracked down her marriage cert though, and her father is stated as Thomas McLean oddly enough her mother is stated as Sarah McLean too MS Hislop ).
Sarah Jane Hyslop (MS Bonner) dies in 1913 at the stated age of 44, her son James registers her death - Thomas McLean is mentioned no where, and it's stated that Sarah was the widow of Thomas Hyslop (note the change of spelling).
What I'm trying to find out is where and when Thomas Hislop died, and where were the rest of the family in 1901?
I've tried every combination I can think of, but I'm no gettin' anywhere and SP are away wie' a' ma wages!!!
I'd be very grateful of any advice.

Just found Williams death cert - he died in 1894 aged 5.
His parents are stated as Thomas Hislop (deceased) and Sarah Jane McLean, formerly Hislop (MS Bonner).

Just had a look on SP:
There are:
2 matches for a Thomas Hyslop died btw 1891 and 1894
4 matches for a Thomas Hislop died btw 1891 and 1894
3 Matches for Thomas H*slop aged 30+
1 of which is in Glasgow City. Have you looked this person at all?
What age was he at his marriage?

Best technique for the kids is to check first to see if they died before 1901 before spending any credits on the census search.Miss Poohs wrote:.....snipped ........What I'm trying to find out is where and when Thomas Hislop died, and where were the rest of the family in 1901? ...snipped ..............

Search on the basis of their year of birth +/- 2 years and you will directly find the deaths of the married Rose Ann and Sarah Jane well after 1901.
I assume that know about James, and SP dropped off the www when I was having a look for Katie.
In other words, you know that Rose Ann and Sarah Jane were alive in 1901.
Given the scenario that you describe, it sounds like the couple separated, or Thomas left her, and she then took up with Thomas McLean (the wording on Rebecca's 1896 birth register entry is typical of such a situation).
I'd consider it quite possible that Thomas H?SLOP emigrated, - there was a great need for miners in the USA.
The fact that she is shown as a widow in 1913 shouldn't be taken as definitive proof that Thomas H?SLOP was dead, - it could have been the case that it was thought by the person registering the death (who was it BTW?) that it was best to show that as her status.
So where were Rose Ann and Sarah Jane in 1901?, - most probably planked with other relatives, - but under what surname ?

All the children except William made it to adulthood and married.
William died in 1894 aged 5, his death is registed by Sarah Jane Hislop or McLean (MS Bonner) - his father Thomas HISLOP is mentioned as deceased.
James Hislop was born 18 May 1892 - and according to what Sarah states on Rebecca McLeans birth cert they ceased to live together in September 1892.
So I have to assume "IF" Mr T HISLOP did die, it was between May 1892 and Dec 4th 1894, as he is alive when James was born 25 May 1892.
Confused?
