Willliam Calderwood.....

Post by angel » Sun Dec 03, 2006 3:58 pm

Hello

I am looking for info on William Calderwood who was married to Ann Galt according to the 1841 census He was an Innkeeper in Main Street Mauchline Ayrshire.

I have 3 marriages for this couple on familysearch for the same year

WILLIAM CALDERWOOD - International Genealogical Index / BI
Gender: Male Marriage: 03 MAY 1795 Riccarton, Ayr, Scotland

WILLIAM CALDERWOOD - International Genealogical Index / BI
Gender: Male Marriage: 07 MAY 1795 Riccarton, Ayr, Scotland

WILLIAM CALDERWOOD - International Genealogical Index / BI
Gender: Male Marriage: 25 MAY 1795 Craigie By Kilmarnock, Ayr, Scotland

Nor sure which date is mine and they are all extracted.

Also can anyone give any info about the Public House in Main Street Mauchlin Ayrshire please?

Heather

Hi Heather,

You'll probably find that none of these three dates are the marriage date. They are the dates the Banns were called in church.

If you are lucky, one of the entries might hav it added which date the marriage actually took place, but most of mine only say "and were later married".

When recording the date on my genealogy software, I just put the last date given.

It's not Main Street in Ayr you're looking for, - it's Main Street in the much smaller town of Mauchline !, - some miles inland from Ayr.

Hi Heather

I was concerned that you were interpreting "Mauchline, Ayr" as meaning that "Mauchline" was the name for a district in Ayr !!

Hi Heather,

The IGI entry for 03-May-1795 was an LDS submission. The other two are extracted from the records of two separate Ayrshire parishes. The best guess is that one was the groom's home parish and the other was the bride's home parish. The banns were called in both parishes - normal practice.

All the best,
