John Templeton-where to go next.....

Hello

I am looking for info on John Templeton which is a bit difficult as it looks like he never married Janet Anderson who he had a daughter by when she was very young in 1847 in Nielson Renfrew.

Is it possible that he was in Jail for under age sex with a minor because that what it looks like when he had his daughter. Also I have no idea how old he was at the time. All I know with the help of TS members that he was from Dalmarnock Road Glasgow in 1847.

Can anyone advise where to go from there please?

Can't remember the exact date when it became illegal under 16 but was after 1847.

I take it there was nothing in the Neilston Kirk Session records?
But your post here brought forth a wee flash in my mind - i was sure i had something to do on Janet for you.
Couldn't mind what though as it was so long ago...but i eventually did find it.

The age of consent for heterosexual acts was set at 12 in 1275 and remained so for six centuries. A concern that young girls were being sold into brothels led Parliament to raise the age of consent to 13 in 1875 under the Offences Against the Person Act 1875. 10 years later, the Criminal Law Amendment Act 1885 further raised the age of consent to 16; and also criminalized male homosexual acts.

Ps. Although the age of consent wasnt changed the first time until 1875, I believe the Kirk took a very stern position on those who "took advantage" of young lassies.
