Looking for King family Greenock.....

Post by JulieC » Mon Apr 25, 2005 10:09 am

James King married Agnes Connor 26th November, 1850

They had 3 children in Greenock, sailed to Australia and had 3 more children. James died not long after the last child was born.

On James death certificate in OZ "parents Unknown"

On James & Agnes 'Banns of marriage registration" his dads name was Duncan.

Would like to know who Duncan married?
Did James have any brothers & sisters?

Any census info would be much appreciated.

What age was he when he died - from his Aus. death cert ?

There is a James King on the IGI :
JAMES CRAWFORD KING
Christening: 16 DEC 1824 Port Glasgow, Renfrew, Scotland
Parents:
Father: DUNCAN KING
Mother: HELEN CRAWFORD
Messages:
Extracted birth or christening record for the locality listed in the record

Port Glasgow is just up-river from Greenock.
and those parent's marriage:
DUNCAN KING
Spouse: HELEN CRAWFORD
Marriage: 23 DEC 1815 Port Glasgow, Renfrew, Scotland
Messages:
Extracted marriage record for locality listed in the record

but I don't know if they are your's.

Were any of the children called Helen? [ after his mother perhaps?]

Many thanks for the help...

James was age 38 when he died in 1868

His occupation....baker

His children were Agnes 1851, James 1853, Margaret 1856, Wilhelmina 1858, Helen 1862, Amelia 1866.

Duncans occupation....clockmaker

I also saw the marriage of Duncan King/Helen Crawford on IGI.....James Crawford was born 1824.

On IGI also spotted a Duncan King m. Mary Neil 1830, can't find any children. I have a Banns marriage extract but doesn't give me anymore info.

Are there any certificates I could buy that would tell me all the info I need.
The Banns extracts tell me very little.

I'll have a wee look at the 1841 and 1851 census after work.
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Hi Andy,

If you wish i'll also have a look - i've time for a quick visit to The Mitchell Library this afternoon.

There's a James (14) with an Amelia (12) in Ann Street, Greenock 1841 - but it doesn't look like they're with their parents.
This James is an apprentice grocer though - that's why i was asking about his occupation.

James (25) & Agnes (24) are in Greenock 1851 (440 Ed 87 p 7).

Censuses

Hi Julie & Andy,

I hope you've found something more positive Andy, because it looks like this James KING may be an orphan.

Julie, he may not of course be your James, but an Amelia with him makes for a strongish case - abt right age too. On the other hand he was an apprentice grocer - not a baker.
But occupations of young lads can change, and in 1851 the only suitable James KING in Greenock is yours with Agnes.
[there is one other James King in 1851 - u/m aged 26, a cooper with parents William, seaman & Helen Allison]
--
1841 cens 564 Ed 75 p 4 (West or Old Greenock)
Ann St.
Mary BROWN, 88, lodging house keeper, born RFW
Mary BELL, 12, ----------- b RFW
John BELL, 17, joiner ap., b RFW
Robert BELL, 15, cooper ap., b RFW
James KING, 14, grocer ap., b RFW
Amelia KING, 12, -------- b RFW
--
1851 cens 564-2 (440) Ed 87 p 7 (West Greenock)
20 Tobago St.
James KING, head, marr, 25, baker, b Port Glasgow
Agnes CONNER, wife, 24, ------------ b Greenock
--
I can't see a Duncan KING or a Helen (CRAWFORD) in the area 1841. Nor can i see a suitable Amelia in 1851, but she may have died young - or if not, be married and under different name elsewhere.

Hi Andy & Jack

I can't thank you guys enough for helping me trying to find my King family in Renfrew. I really appreciate your help.

Could you guys suggest which way to turn next.

I think I may have to go to a LDS centre and look through some films.

A big thankyou
Julie from OZ

Sorry I didn't make it to the Watt the other day.

It's looking fairly good that Wilma found James birth in Port Glasgow there were other children born to this couple but no recorded Amelia:

1. JAMES CRAWFORD KING - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 16 DEC 1824 Port Glasgow, Renfrew, Scotland

2. MARGARET KING - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 25 MAR 1821 Port Glasgow, Renfrew, Scotland

3. MARY KING - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 15 SEP 1816 Port Glasgow, Renfrew, Scotland

4. HELEN KING - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 01 AUG 1819 Port Glasgow, Renfrew, Scotland

5. ROBERT KING - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 28 DEC 1817 Port Glasgow, Renfrew, Scotland

I won't make it up to the Watt until Saturday but will check out the Trade Directories and Newpaper indexes for Duncan.

There was a Typhoid outbreak in Greenock in 1837 (or thereabouts), comprehensive records of the victims are extant.

I'll also check for Agnes Connar and her parents in the 1841 and 1851 census. I suspect them to be John and Agnes McKellar.
