Help needed please.....

Post by vandab » Tue Dec 05, 2006 9:12 pm

Hi,
This my first post on this site and i could do with some pointer's.
I am reseaching my family in Brechin. I need to find a birth date for my GGrandfather John Lawson c1853, Father Andrew Lawson, mother Christina Leighton, also both Andrew's and Christina's births . I have looked on SP, Ancestry and the IGI site but withouth much luck. I suspect i need to contact Brechin if anyone can give me further details,
Thanks in advance,
Vandab :(

Hi Vandab,

Welcome to TS!

Do you know that John Lawson was definately born in Brechin or could he have been born somewhere else and moved there? Have you tried to find him on the 1851 or 1861 census, as this would probably confirm his place of birth.

There is also a possibility that his birth might noy be registered as he was born before 1855.

Hi Vandab,

Welcome to TS!

You seem to be in luck! There is an Andrew Lawson born in the magic year of 1855.

BATCH C112751
ANDREW LAWSON 21 FEB 1855 Brechin, Angus, Scotland
PARENTS: Andrw Lawson and Christina Leighton

I haven't yet checked, but looking for the parents extracted marriage in Brechin on 07 DEC 1838 Brechin, Angus, Scotland, if it's them, it would appear they would have a lot of children. In the meantime, the following seem to be Andrew and siblings.

1. ANDREW LAWSON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 21 FEB 1855 Brechin, Angus, Scotland

2. WILLIAM LAWSON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 20 NOV 1857 Brechin, Angus, Scotland

3. PETER CRAIK LAWSON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 01 JUN 1860 Brechin, Angus, Scotland

4. ALEXANDER LAWSON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 28 MAR 1863 Brechin, Angus, Scotland

Lawson Family, Brechin

Post by vandab » Wed Dec 06, 2006 7:51 pm

Hi,
Thanks for the replies and the welcome.
The Andrew i am looking for is the father of that family, the younger Andrew born 1855 is my G Grandfather's brother,( John Lawson). I have all the census returns so can track then that way but i am having trouble finding their actul birth records. John Lawson c 1853 was born in Brechin as i have his military history from National Archives. I also have Andrew senior and Christina's wedding.
I am basically looking for anything to help me go back in time.
Hope this makes sense
Regards,
Vanda :)
Ps would birth's pre 1855 be in the church record's?

Hi again Vandab,

Sorry, I couldn't find what you were looking for. The information I gave you (which you already have) was from the Hugh Wallace site. There a lot of Lawsons from Brechin...did you also have a look at that site to see if you could piece anything together. Here's the site just in case.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com ... ngus.htm#B

As for post 1855 (that should be pre-1855) registration...with some of my own families, I find that not all children (even from the same families) appear to be registered anywhere, but there are experts here on TS who will probably be able to direct you much better than I.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help and good luck with your continued search.

Regards,
Anne H

Hi Vandab,

The 1855 certificate is available on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk on a pay per view basis. It details how many children were born prior to the 1855 birth and whether they were all still living at the time of the 1855 birth. No obvious signs of the pre-1855 lot on the online IGI (an index of the Old Parochial Registers - OPRs and more).

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Vandab and Andrew,

See, didn't I tell you an expert would come along, Vandab...I knew you would get a lot of good info on the 1855 BC but didn't even mention it. That's the difference between myself and an expert.

Thanks for pointing it out Andrew :)
