John Spence and Margaret Blyth.....

Hi

I am looking for the parents of John Spence who married Margaret
Blyth 27 August 1824 in Glasgow. John's trade was a shoe maker and
had a daughter Martha sometimes known as Mary who was born about
1832 she also married in Glasgow.

Hi Heather,

Here's what looks like your John SPENCE & family - but wife was as Mary in 1841. I forgot to get the 1861 census, but John (58] was living then - with him is Mary Spence 46 (possibly Mary Devine?) & David 18. So hopefully you'll be able to find John's DC on Scotlandspeople, and that his parents were known.
David's 1864 MC should say if father John was still living - if not then you know it's 1861 to 1864. But if yes, you could try and find John in the 1871 census if you want to narrow down when he died.
I don't know if you have the details of what looks like sons Walter & David (both have daurs named Margaret Blyth Spence, both b 1872), but in case not here they are.

. I now know their children and grandchildren and so much more. When I was down in Edinburgh I was told by one of the staff that the Spences had a factory in Linlithgow. I wonder if John was related to them?

Hi Heather,

Mind you'll need to get Walter & David's MCs to check they have the right parents.
Also father John's DC to see if it does gives his wife as Margaret Blyth (new partner Mary may complicate things).
And if Mary is the informant then i do hope she knew who his parents were....

So it's fingers crossed time!

Hi Jack

I am pretty sure that is my family as I have a print off from SP for daughter Martha's wedding. She is age 24 which would make her b.abt 1832 and she is age in 1841 makes her b.abt 1831. It was from this print off that I got the parents names. A little cross checking won't do any harm tho'.

I take it that John DOWNIE married your Martha SPENCE in 1856? Even if so, this 1855 BC might be worth a look at - he's with John & Martha in 1861....

I have all 4 Children from LDS but I never noticed that Thomas was born in 1855. Their marriage is 24 November 1856 Calton Glasgow. I also have John Downie b.abt 1791 Snr amd wife Mary Muir b.abt 1795 m. 02 April 1816 Glasgow with 6 Children from the LDS. John Spence and Margaret Blyth m. 27 August 1824.

There were 4 children with John & Martha in 1861 - Mary 11, John 8, Thomas 6, Margaret 1.
Sadly Robert 1858 has probably died quite young.
So seems there were 2 DOWNIE children born pre 1855.
The 1855 BC of Thomas should be well worth looking at.
