My grandmother's name was Sophie Chapman Haxton, born 11-20-1887. Her father was Frank Chalmers Haxtonand her mother; Margaret Craig Haxton, and I believe her maiden name was McNaughton. Sophie had 2 sisters, Margaret and Isabelle, and a bother; Frank. Sophie, Margaret and Isabelle emigrated to the U.S. there is a colorful story of Frank Haxton that I would like to confirm. It was said that he embezzled money from the coal co. he worked for to send his daughters to the U. S. the McNaughton name is somehow connected to the coal co., we think the owners (and relatives). If anyone is able to gather info. on this subject please cantact me at: jmacik1ATcomcast.net
thanks!

Possible Embezzlement (?) and Thanks!
Thank you Marilyn! I did know of those family members, but I was not aware that it was on WorldConnect. I have been in touch with John Gibson Chalmers, who is a distant cousin, and he has filled me in on many relations. I still am very curious about the possible embezzlement issue and hope someone can point me in the right direction. thanks again!

Hello Janet,
Ah, you're welcome and hopefully you'll get to the bottom of it soon. Why not try the local library and see if they may be able to help you further along?
By the way, you don't mention where in Scotland this event occured? Or where in the US the Haxton girls resided? We have a Haxton family here in Rhode Island that reaches back to Scotland.
Good Luck with your quest!
Regards
Marilyn

Our Haxton family is from the Glasgow area. Their family home was on Langside Rd. in Govanhill. Margaret, Isabelle and Sophie travelled to the U.S. at different times. After their mother died, my ggrandfather, Frank Chalmers Haxton remarried and didn't like the children. He was a coal merchant in that area and I think the MacNaughton family owned the company. I do know that the coal co. went bankrupt although I do not know the name. The name Archie MacNaughton was connected to the coal co. and he was my ggreat grandmother's (Margaret MacNaughton) cousin.I don't know who Frank Chalmers Haxton married or what happened to him. I am very curious as to whether he embezzled money from the coal company to pay the passage for his daughters to the U.S. My grandmother (Sophie) used to say that the stepmother was mean and didn't want them there and that was why their father sent them off to the U. S. I cannot find any record of Sophie entering the U.S. for the 1st time, but she did travel to Ireland with her firstborn, Russell, in 1915. On that ship manifest (the Cameronia in 1915) it lists her original entry to the U.S. as 1902. She would have been 15 years old at that time. The three sisters married and settled in Chicago. Sophie married an Irish immigrant named Herbert McNeilly. He was a bricklayer. They raised four children during the depression, my mother being one of them. There was also a brother, Frank, who I tracked to Canada; he served in their military during WWII, but I don't know any more than that about him. I don't know of any of their family living in Rhode Island, but it certainly is possible that their is some connection. Thanks for the library suggestion Marilyn. I appreciate your help.
