Gorbals of old.....

Post by Wullie58 » Mon Jan 01, 2007 12:31 am

I would be very grateful if anyone could give me any information about the Mutters. My Granda was John Bell Mutter and lived in the Gorbals in the 1930's. He had a brother who was a casualty of the the Great War by wy of mustard gas. I think he had two sisters. One was married to A Bradford and emigrated to South Africa probably after the war. I am new to this forum and other searches on the web have been frustrating and unhelpful. If I am doing this wrong please be patient and instruct me on the protocol of the forum. Thankyou and may I say Happy New Year to one and all .Wullie fae liverpool.

Hi Wullie58
..a very warm welcome to Talking Scot :D (and a Happy New Year when it comes!) here, have a drink on the house... [cheers]

Have you tried a search on the Scotland People web site (link at top of page) for perhaps a death of one of your relatives? You can search deaths up to and including 1956.

The Commonwaealth Grave Commission at:
http://www.cwgc.org
might be worth trying for your WW1 casualty. Failing that try :
Scottish National War Memorial
www.snwm.org

Best wishes
Lesley

Hello Wullie,

First, welcome to the friendliest forum on the web and a Very Happy New Year to you.

Everyone on here will try to help you as much as they can. I have certainly been given the most valuable advice and even actual information on here. I'd still be struggling if it weren't for the great folks on here.

Hello Wullie & a Happy New Year.

You might find that your family originally came from rural Lanarkshire - the name Mutter was well-known in Stonehouse, altho' there don't seem to be any there now. As the other say, try SP first (but be warned, it can cause serious damage to your credit card!)

Searching Ross - Lochwinnoch & Eaglesham, Renfrewshire; Glasgow; Glover - Paisley; Macadam - Glasgow.

Hello and Happy New Year Wullie,

There is a birth on SP of a John Bell Mutter in 1899 in the Gorbals.

There is indeed a Mutter/Bradford marriage in 1917 in Lanarkshire.

There are 72 Mutter surnames in Scotland on the 1901 census but only 3 in Lanarkshire. Well worth spending some credits on SP.

Or do you have all that info and you are looking for descendants?

regards,
Annette M
