Researching MacColl/McColl/McCall/MacCallum/MacInnes

Post by lkylnde » Thu Jan 11, 2007 4:15 am

Hello all,

All I know is that my MacColl's hail from Argyll. MacCallum from Kintyre. Duncan MacColl was married to Rebecca MacInnes in 1790 in Argyll. His son Duncan MacColl (b.1809) emigrated to Canada (Ontario) in 1830. I'm just beginning my search and need all the help I can get. Thanks.

Hi lkylnde, and Welcome to TalkingScot!

Scottish government birth, death and marriage records didn't start until 1855 and the earliest indexed census is 1841. Some information on marriages and births from the Old Parish Registers prior to that time are available online, but those are largely the Church of Scotland records.

I did a quick search on the Old Parish Registers and on the International Genealogical Index, for the names and years you gave, but didn't have any success.

Be assured that another member with more knowledge than I, will soon be along to give you further help.

Again, Welcome to TalkingScot and glad you've joined us!

The government censuses began in the UK in 1801, but the 4 decennial censuses up to 1831 didn't include the level of detail that is the case from 1841 onwards, - sometimes these earlier censuses only involved the name of the Head of Household and the number of others in the household. In any case, all detailed info was destroyed after the relevant statistical data had been extracted.

Fragments do survive and can be worth searching for, - there's various listings, - but don't start out with high expectations

Linde

Have you checked the three volumes of Donald Whyte's "A Dictionary of Scottish Emigrants to Canada before Confederation" ?

Find a library or Family History Society that has them, or hope that a member here has copies.
