Any volunteers out there to track down the 1964 Scotsman obituary on Robert Wilson, the famous tenor and theatre impressario, plus the news story on his death - on stage?, at the Gaiety Theatre in Ayr?

Forget it, - I didn't realise that the Scotsman archive only goes up to 1950!DavidWW wrote:Any volunteers out there to track down the 1964 Scotsman obituary on Robert Wilson, the famous tenor and theatre impressario, plus the news story on his death - on stage?, at the Gaiety Theatre in Ayr?

I'd imagine, though, that they would still have archived copies of the actual papers for that period? As famous as he was, I'd imagine there would have been quite a write up about his death.DavidWW wrote:Forget it, - I didn't realise that the Scotsman archive only goes up to 1950!DavidWW wrote:Any volunteers out there to track down the 1964 Scotsman obituary on Robert Wilson, the famous tenor and theatre impressario, plus the news story on his death - on stage?, at the Gaiety Theatre in Ayr?

A cat leaves pawprints on your heart
McDonald or MacDonald (some couldn't make up their mind!), Bonner, Crichton, McKillop, Campbell, Cameron, Gitrig (+other spellings), Clark, Sloan, Stewart, McCutcheon, Ireland (the surname)

Not the Scotsman but here is the Times which contradicts the idea that he died on stage.
From The Time (Obituaries) 26 September 1964
"Mr. Robert Wilson, the Scottish tenor, died at his home in Ayr yesterday. He was 57. In April this year, Wilson and his wife were involved in a car crash as they drove home from the funeral in Motherwell of his father-in-law. He spent several weeks in Kilmarnock Infirmary and Ayrshire Central Hospital, suffering from severe head and chest injuries.
Robert Wilson trained as an engineering draughtsman before turning to the stage in 1930. Three years later he joined the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, then, in 1938, he became a concert singer. He discovered and re-discovered dozens of old ballads, many of which he recorded. Today many of these records are selling as well as they did when they were made almost 30 years ago.
Two years ago Wilson gave up his career as a concert singer to devote himself to his business intersts which included a partnership in a New York theatrical agency, sponsoring Scottish tours of the United States, a Glasgow music publishing concern, and a holiday travel agency.
He is survived by his widow, Margaret – also injured in the April car crash – and two son."
Regards
Tom

Re Robert Wilson
Hi all,
To add to Tom's Obituary discovery.
Robert WILSON was born 2 JAN 1907 at 3 Woodside Terrace, Cambuslang,
and died aged 57 on 25 SEP 1964 at 4 Chalmers Road, Ayr.
The causes of death doesn't mention any injuries.
I haven't said what they are because Robert's death is after the cut off point on SP.
But they are not unusual in any way.
Jack
