Not a long time ago in my lot (so far). 1950/51 or thereabouts and that only because he should have been named John, but my Auntie didn't want two Johns in the house, so she registered him as Ian.
There is also an Iain, but he is even later - mid to late 60's.

Hi Davie,
From the 1000+ plus names that I have on my family tree database, there is only 1 Ian, from 1947. I know that some of the older (and younger) Johns were normally known as Ian, but not on official paperwork.
All the best,
AndrewP

I have nephews called IAIN and EWAN, but earlier to them it has to be the generation above me (b 1900-25) where the name EOIN was used, and then the generations before (in Ireland).
My GGGrandfather appears in Griffiths Valuation as OWEN.
Cheers

Hello Davie
53 years ago when my mum gave me that name the family was scandelised telling her that she could'nt give me a name like that. Thankfully she stuck to what she had chosen cos my dads mum wanted to call me Penelope.
