Hi TS Members was wondering if someone could help me am looking to see who else lived at 13 West Blackhall Street Greenock the reason been my grandad (ANDREW ANDERSON) lived there in 1928 and died on the 9/10/1935 aged 35 before he lived there his wife (my grannie) ELIZABETH SMITH lived there she was married from that address on the 11/05/1928 she died in HALIFAX 1989 her parents were James Smith and Ann Stones who also lived there and for how long many thanks Ellen

Hi Ellen,
I had a look in the 1861 census, and there are 21 households living at that address

So it will be quite a job to list them all over the years! Your best bet might be a city directory, if such exists. Sometimes they have a section that is a street directory, and lists all the people at a given address. Sounds like a good job for a rainy day in the library

Hi Ellen

The info I posted should be the same data you would get from SP for the 1881 census. In order to verify just who the families are you'd have to consult the BMD's on SP to piece things together...that and perhaps searches in the 1891 census. It would be a challenge to move forward and connect onto what you already have....I think better to work back from what you know and see if you run into any of these families. Does that make sense??

Since I live even farther from Greenock than you do, I'm hoping that someone out there knows about directories and where they may be found

I'm guessing here but the Paisley library is probably the best bet for historic local directories. Renfrewshire was torn apart and slotted into the Strathclyde Region then the Region was disaggregrated (torn apart!

about 20 years ago and somehow Renfrewshire became smaller and Inverclyde was formed as a separate local government district.
Port Glasgow, Greenock and Gourock form three separate, but physically connected towns along the south bank of the Clyde. They have their own library dept but Paisley has been collecting local information for 100 years longer and will have a larger collection.
I think they can be contacted by e-mail through the Renfrew Council site.
