Related to John Kerr b 1829 Culter

Post by maggiehill » Fri Jan 26, 2007 9:08 pm

My gggrandmother Margaret Finlayson married John Lando in 1854; before she married she had an illegitimate daughter named Janet Finlayson Kerr in 1852/3 at Biggar. Janet lived with the Lando’s as Janet Lando; Janet also had an illegitimate son John Lando Kerr in 1878.

Using the Scottish naming pattern the John is not John Lando or one of his sons but the father of Janet Kerr. On the 1851 at Libberton (not far from Biggar) there is a John Kerr aged 22 born at Culter. On the 1861 Census the Finlayson’s had moved to Libberton.

Is any person related to John Kerr b 1829 at Culter as we would like to have a DNA test done to see if there is a family connection?

Hi Maggie,
Too bad there are no answers to your post yet. Have you tried tracing the family down yourself to finally narrow down the possibilities? It could at least give you an idea of the current geographical area of some of the descendants. You may get lucky and find someone whose family knowledge begins where yours ends and a combined effort will arrive at some living descendants. I assume you are doing a Y-DNA analysis, so you need male descendants?

All the best,
Sarah

Hi Sarah,

The Lando side of the family is no problem, it is the John Kerr I have just started looking again for him, but searching forwards is difficult. My grandfather’s mother was also illegitimate and named Janet Finlayson Kerr born in 1852/3 at Biggar. We cannot find any information on the Kirk Sessions about her and we have been informed (by the Historian in Biggar) that the Kerr’s originally went to the Gillespie Church in the 1850's the old South United Presbyterian Church. He does not know if they kept their disciplinary records, but said they will be in old Register House by now if they exist.

While my grandfather lived at Felton Farm West Linton he and others set up in 1920 the Dolphinton Creamery Company and the building was constructed by Kerr Builders from Biggar.

Back searching for John Kerr and family.
