His o's were various in their style. Some closed at the top, some not. The lead-off connecting to the next letter - some leave from the top of the o, others from much lower down.
See the word son in the next family group.
All the best,

No!, 'cos if you're an Indian sub-continent/Chinese/Phillipino data inputter you don't have the luxury of a leisurely look at the rest of the page.LesleyB wrote:Hi David
With the image quality it is difficult to see. Any chance of seeing a little more of the page too, so we can see how the letters are usually formed?
Best wishes
Lesley
And, see ADP's post, - would it really have helped

a. I'm not an Indian sub-continent/Chinese/Phillipino data inputter - and anyway I'm sure, just like Freecen volunteers, they do see the whole page, and at a reasonable resolution....No!, 'cos if you're an Indian sub-continent/Chinese/Phillipino data inputter you don't have the luxury of a leisurely look at the rest of the page.

I guess it would depend on how much knowledge I had of names and their spellings.
If I had no knowledge and was just trying to transcribe from that image I would say it was M'Cull or W'Cull.
But with some knowledge I guess I could say it was McCull and I am guessing it is supposed to be McCall.

That's the whole point of my poll.Pandabean wrote:I guess it would depend on how much knowledge I had of names and their spellings.

In other words, given my expertise, and the time that I have available, I can make the judgement that McCull or M'Cull is unlikely but not impossible; that McCall and McColl, and the M' variants are equally likely; but also take all the time that I want to to look at other entries on the same page, never mind preceding and following pages .................. and, beyond that, take a sidetrip into the BMD records to see how the surname is recorded there ......... before I reach a conclusion

I have this very problems with McCalls.
They have been McCall, McColl , McCaul, McAul, McAll and also with Mac prefix.
It is very frustrating especially when the knowledge of them is thin and they like to move parishes all the time and they use extremely common names William , Robert James and John
