Fort William & the Jones'

Post by Pandabean » Fri Feb 09, 2007 9:08 pm

I am trying to trace my Jones family in the area of Fort William, parish of Kilmallie and I am having trouble tracing James Jones' wife, Mary McLachlan(d). Census results show she was born in Glasgow, Lanarkshire around 1831.

James and Mary married in 1854 in Kilmallie and had their first son the same year. Which is a shame. :( I wish they had been a year later. Mary died in 1899 and appeared to have been married twice. First to James (who died in the 1870s) and then to Alexander McNeil.

Mary's parents were John McLachlan and Anne MacLaren and I can find no trace of them. I cannot find a marriage for this couple on the IGI nor on SP.

I think I did find a death result for Anne but it was neither in the parishes of Glasgow/Lanarkshire or Argyllshire.

Can anyone help with the above couple? I cannot think of any more variations on the spelling of McLachlan. I have tried it down at it's bare bones. M*cL*hl*n.

Perhaps they did not register their marriage?

Also does anyone know any good sites on the history of the Fort William area? I know a bit about when it was changed to that name and that it was garrisoned by red coats (i think) during the 17th C.

Hi Andy

Have you tried McLachlane. I found an elusive Helen McLachlan registered under that spelling just when I had nearly given up altogether looking for her birth.

The occupation is blank. I would need to check the second marriage certificate of Mary to see if there is any occupation. But Mary and her husband, John are both Hawkers.

As for their son John, he was a baker and then a Policeman in Glasgow.

Anne, I did try that as well as having it end in a 'd' which appears on some certificates.

Just as an example.....here are possibles that pop up in a search on the 1841 Scottish census on Ancestry....
McLanchlan
McLauchlan
McLauchlin
McLaucklan
McLaughlan
McLaughlin
McLauglan
McLahlan
Mclaghlan
McLaclan
McLachlen

And Anne's trailing E is good adivce too. So basically don't always expect there to be an "h" in there.

Best wishes
Jean

Hello Andy,

Is this Mary and family in 1881? The children's ages are very slightly out but this looks very likely to be the family of James Jones and Mary McLachlan, although if her age is correct she was a bit young to be getting married in 1854.
This lady says she was born in Fort William although I know from experience she may have been havering. :D

Thanks Annette, I do believe that is them. I think I narrowed down when she married to her second husband. I will have look for it again today.

On her death certificate in 1899 she is aged 74. Which seems more likely.

Just got confusing now. I looked at the second marriage certificate and it seems like different parents although it is hard to read.

I can make out most of it but the parents names seem different to her death certificate.

Mary's Death Certificate

I know this the correct Mary as her son John comes up from Glasgow to sign the Death Certificate.
