urquharts of Tain

Post by pixieo5 » Thu Feb 15, 2007 12:04 pm

i have traced my family tree from my gran b 1929 through her father back to 1780 basically because her grandfather had such an unusal forename so it was easy to start with ,within 2 hours and about 70 credits i was back to 1845.I was hooked how easy was that, then i hit the brick wall. All my relatives are dead that could help me so all i started with was knowing my fat grandads name (our nickname for him as we had so many great grandparents and grandparents at the time )I found my great grandas birth cert. and found out his father was called Lockhart Urquhart (what a great name) so i search and found even more Lockhart Urquharts i was buzzing then got back to 1845 then nothing some one e-mailed me and told me of a Lockhart Urquhart born 26 june 1780 in Tain ross and cromity and told me he was begot of fornication by christy mcpherson and Robert Urquhart so i thought i would look it up in the OPR in scotlands people nothing nothing at all ,so now i am at a loss what to do.If anyone could help me i would be realy grateful thanks :?

Hi again,

Just had a look in the OPR births on ScotlandsPeople and LOCKARD Urquharts birth is definitely there in 1780.

The IGI site is www.familysearch.org and is handy for checking dates before you go onto ScotlandsPeople.

If you're still having problems just get back to me.

Sharon, put in the name exactly as Caroline has spelled it. He's there.

Hi Sharon,

Just wanting to check - are you entering his christian name as LOCKARD as opposed to LOCKHART?

One of the great things I learned on here was the use of wildcards when searching on SP.

Many of out ancestors were illiterate so the person writing these original records often wrote what they heard, often from someone with a very different accent. You also might sometimes across one or two that have been misindexed, but that's quite rare.
