Coldingham details.....

Post by bellcje » Wed Feb 21, 2007 10:19 am

I’m trying to find further information on 4 x Gt Grandparents who married 30/12/1791 in Coldingham.
John BARRIE b c1771
Margaret KER (KERR?) b c1771

I have no idea of John’s parents or his place of birth.
Margaret’s parent may have been Ninian KER and Marion Cathrea? b Scotland.
This is all I have on this family, any help or confirmation of this information would be appreciated.
Regards,
Chris.

Thanks for your reply, very helpful.
I have been able to find a few siblings of the Carr family.
Both Barrie and Kerr families appear to change names several times, which makes things difficult.
As for the Barry/Barrie family naming pattern. There is quite a gap from their marriage in 1791 to the first name in 1798. Likely that there were a few deaths.
The surname Cathrea is also proving a problem; I have not found any matches for it.

I think I need contact from someone with knowledge of Coldingham and nearby Churches.

Thank you again for you help,
Chris.

Hi Chris
This is a bit of a long shot but, on the IGI there is a marraige for a Ninian Kerr and a Marine Caldra 8 June 1753 in Buncle & Preston.
There is also a M.I. for Chirneside Churchyard which reads from the book
No 181
Ninean Ker 14.7.1806 75yrs
on the back
Mary Galdie? Calder? (obviously this stone is difficult to read)
spouse to Ninian Ker, tenant in Reston West Side 5.12.1775, 45yrs.
Children Mary James Mary Margaret son George ?2 17?5 25yrs.

No182
John Ker late tenant Green Mains 1.11.1787 68yrs
on side
Elizabeth Hogg spouse to John Ker portioner in Berwick 23.11.1808 43yrs. Ninian and 2 Johns and 3 daus. of their children who all died in infancy.

I have the Berwickshire Eastern Parishes M.I so if you have any other names you want looked for feel free to ask.

Caraid
Sutherland, Calder, Dunnet, Budge from Dunnet, Caithness
Anderson, Henderson, Hunter, Melrose, Denholm, McAdam from East Lothian
Mack from Coldingham

The name problem is a common one, but it seems that many of our rellies were illiterate and the "writer" of the original OPR's simply wrote down what they heard. Added to that the likelyhood that, if it was the minister who made the entries, very often he was from outside the area and had difficulties with the accent/dialect as well

When you are searching on SP do what the folks on here taught me to do, make good use of the wildcards. It can reveal a lot.
