Trying to find parents for alexander cockburn, he married helen platt in berwickshire, sorry no dates, their first son was born 1791(thomas) then their was john born 1797, joseph was born on the 1st of august 1802, i have found an helen cockburn cant find a birth on her but i found a death cert for her on the 14 december 1871 saying she married a thomas dumma with alexander and helen as her parents. thanks debra

Hi Debra,
There are three alex* c*kb*rn births in Berwick between 1751 and 1771 on Scotlands People. Have you had a look at them?

Hi, thanks for looking, i am finding it hard to get any further back in my tree as i cant get anything on alexander and helen, when i was last at register house they said i might have to give up on the cockburn which i dont want to do. thankd again debra

Is Helen the one listed in the 1871 census as a mother-in-law in the Thomas family?

Not sure what a daughter-in-law age 13 is all about? I think it must mean Stepdaughter, and that Helen was married first to a Grant.

In 1841 Thomas is married to Jesse:

1841, Orange Lane, Eccles, Berwickshire
Thomas Dumma, 50, born Scotland, Joiner
Jesse Dumma, 50, born Berwickshire
Adam Dumma, 14, born Scotland
Robert Hardy, 15, born Berwickshire, Ap Joiner

But, the birth of Agnes looks to be this one in the IGI:

Agnes Grant
Birth: 28 APR 1837 Swinton and Simprin, Berwick, Scotland
Father: John Grant
Mother: Agnes Cockburn

So... Are Helen and Agnes the same person?

I know this is not answering your question about Helen's parents, but I am trying to work backwards and eventually get there. You don't say what information you already have, so sorry if I am duplicating what you already know.

Thanks sarah for all your information on helen dumma,all i have on her is a death cert, she died on the 14 december 1871 age 71, it says that her husband was thomas dumma and that her parents were alexander cockburn and helen platt, i have found three brothers for her thomas was born in 1791 and married elspeth kay, john cockburn born 1797 he married helen kay, and joseph born 1st august 1802. cant make out the first name but the surname looks like thomson signed her death cert saying he was her son in law. thanks again for all your help debra
