Robert CONQUER son of John CONQUER.....

Post by Matthewm » Sun Mar 04, 2007 1:06 pm

In my tree I have a Robert CONQUER who in the 1861, 1871 and 1881 English censuses gives his place of birth as Scotland.

His age on these censuses would mean that he was born circa 1815 to 1817.

On his marriage certificate to Tryphena TOZER on 15 Jun 1846 in Plymouth Devon he gave his father's name as John CONQUER and he was a Labourer.

I have found only found record of one Robert CONQUER who was born to John CONQUER and Mary ERSKINE on 13 Nov 1814 in Liberton. This ties in father wise and date wise but others have him marrying someone else.

Has anyone come across another Robert CONQUER in their research ?

Matthew

Hello Matthew,

Is this the Robert Conquer you think others have 'marrying somebody else'?
This Robert married Jane Douglas but he can't be the one born to John and Mary Erskine as, according to this census, he wasn't born in Midlothian.

Piece: SCT1841/695 Place: Newbattle -Midlothian Enumeration District: 3
Civil Parish: Newbattle Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: Newbattle
Folio: 3 Page: 7
Address: Coats

Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
CONQUER Robert M 25 Ag Lab Outside Census County (1841)
CONQUER Jean F 25 Outside Census County (1841)
CONQUER Charles M 7 Outside Census County (1841)
CONQUER Barbra F 5 Outside Census County (1841)
CONQUER John M 4 Outside Census County (1841)
CONQUER Mary F 2 Midlothian
CONQUER N.K. M 3w Midlothian
WIGHT William M 15 Midlothian
WIGHT N.K. F 2w Midlothian

Hope this makes sense.

Hi Matthew

Welcome to TalkingScot and what an interesting post for you to start with :!:

Scotlandspeople only shows two births under the name Conquer between 1810 and 1820 so it was not a common name - at least with that spelling

Perhaps a bit of lateral thinking for other possible ways of spelling the name might come up with other possibilities.
I would use wild cards and enter Con*r to see if any others come up.
