I am working on a friend's tree at the moment and this family have led me a merry dance [so what's new in genealogy?]. This is what Margaret Dalziel's certs told me:
Marriage: 1879 Cambusnethan: Margaret was aged 19 and she gave her parents names as John Dalziel, Oarsman, and Agnes Dalziel, m.s. McGregor.
Death: 1894 Cambusnethan: she was 54yrs. The informant was her husband and he gave her parents as John Dalziel, Coalminer and Agnes Dalziel, m.s. Dalziel
After visits to N.R.H. and trying all sorts online I would say she was Margaret Dalziel born Feb 1860, Illegitimate child of Agnes Dalziel.
1861 Census, Newmains [Stone Craig?] row, 3, Double Houses, Village of Coltness Iron Works, Cambusnethan, Lanark
William Dalziel, Head, Married, 69yrs, Labourer about Stables, born Cambusnethan, Lanark
Jean Dalziel, Wife, Married, 69yrs, born "
Susan Dalziel, Daughter, Widow, 35,Tambourer, born "
Agnes Dalziel, Niece, Unmarried, 23, Tambourer, born "
William Patisson[Patterson?], Nephew, Unmarried, 17, Driver underground, born "
John Irvine, Nephew, 9, Scholar, born "
David Irvine, Nephew, 6 , Scholar, born "
Margaret Dalziel, child of Niece, 1, born "
1871 census Agnes wasn't there but Margaret is still living with William and his daughter, Susan.
1881 census Margaret was married and her husband, Andrew was Head. Susan was named as mother in law.
I presume that Agnes either died or moved away leaving her child in the care of her uncle and cousin and that Susan became a mother to her.
Do you think that I have just become too confused? Do you agree with me or can you give me any other suggestions?
Sorry this is so long.
Rae
I don't suppose anyone has come across an 'emoticon' where the head is going 'tweet, tweet' [like when you walk into a plate glass window] because that is what mine is like at the moment?
Dalziel family, Lanark - have I worked this out correctly?

Hi Rach:
We don't have that particular emoticon, but we do have these
and more. Full directions are posted viewtopic.php?t=6545
I had to write it all out in clusters to follow who was where, when; but I'd say you've got it right!
There are 8 Agnes Dalziel marriages, in Scotland 1866 +/- 5 years, listed on IGI
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/ ... search.asp
I think that Susan would have raised Margaret as her own, because she would have been between 1 and 11 years old, 1861-71. An illegitimate child would have been a hindrance to marriage possibilities and to getting employment.
I'm only assuming, that Margaret's birth Mother would have been the required answer on the marriage and death registries.
Could it have been a neighbour who gave the mother-in-law title to Susan, if there was no one home when the enumerator came around?

Hi Frances,
Thank you for taking the trouble to sort through my ramblings!
I wondered about Agnes leaving Margaret but, as you say, she had been living there all that time with the extended family. They seemed to be a close-knit family as there were always different family members living there according to the different censuses. Of course, in those days that's what happened as there were no 'benefits'.
As Margaret was only 19 when she was married I thought her mother's maiden name would have been correct but there must have been reasons for that too. That is as far as I am going back for the moment.
I should have used one of the emoticons you suggested but somehow they didn't quite look like the way I was feeling. Anyway that has passed and I have handed over the information to my friend who was desperate for me to go so that she could have a good old read over all I had found for her!

My great grandmother's sister had an illegitimate son. From the start he appeared with his grandparents in censuses, but on them is shown as grandson. On both his MC and DC it is them who are named as his parents!
Either he didn't know who his mother really was, or had chosen not to disclose his illegitemacy to his wife.
Perhaps Margaret's situation is similar.
added later: By the way his real mother married only a few years later but he never lived with her and her husband. Probability that he didn't know the wee boy was his wife's?

Thanks for your information, Emanday.
It is always good to hear from others who have had the same sort of thing in their records.
