Arthur Thomson - Confectioner

Post by bethsam » Thu Mar 08, 2007 8:57 pm

Hi Everyone

I've found an Arhtur Thomson in my husband's tree, a confectioner, born 1826, in what looks like Kennoway, Fife (census records). What intrigues me is that 2 of his daughters were born in France, 1847 and 1853 and the other children in Dundee. Does anyone know how I would begin to find out about how he got to France way back then and where in France he lived? He died in Dundee in 1882.

Thanks

Hi Bethsam,
Have you tried looking at the girls' marriage and/or death records, to see if more detail is given of their places of birth? I have never tried myself, but I understand that it is virtually impossible to find such a record in France without knowing where the birth took place, since there is no national index. On the other hand... their births might also have been registered in Scotland. On this post:

I found births that took place in Rio de Janeiro, but were reported in the parish records in Logie Buchan, Aberdeen. So it is possible that the births are recorded somewhere in Scotland.

Good luck! :D
