I have really given up on ever finding my elusive family, but wondered if anyone could pick my gr.gr.grandfather up in any Scotland census please?

He eventually ended up in South Shields, Co Durham and worked and lived next door to families who had been born in Ireland and then settled in Scotland, eventually ending up in South Shields.

I know this is a bit of a long shot but I have had no luck at all trying to find him, until picking him up on the 1871 census living in Jarrow, South Shields, working as an iron shearer in the local shipyard.

His name is Simon Larkin born 1845 Ireland.

Any help would be great

I checked FreeCen but they didn't have any Simon Larkins lurking anywhere.

Scotland's People censuses threw out blanks too.

but...... the 1901 census for England and Wales gave a hit:

Simon Larkin 56 Ireland Durham Jarrow General Labourer

see: http://www.1901census.nationalarchives.gov.uk you can then pay to see the full household and print out the record.

Ancestry.co.uk has what seems to be the same man still living in the Durham area in 1891 as well.

If he's your man then he hasn't strayed too far afield and the household information will make other details easy to substantiate.

Thank you for replying to my message regarding my g.g.grandfather Simon Larkin. It was very kind of you to take the trouble to look him up for me.
I actually had been able to find him from 1881 but can`t find him before then.
I know on the census his place of birth was down as Poland but I do believe that has been mistranscribed and should of read Ireland.

I also know he was married in Jarrow, South Shields during 1871 but does not appear on the 1871 census, talk about elusive!
I can only think he must of remained somewhere in Ireland and at some stage ended up in Jarrow but I would really like to know when he arrived in England/Scotland and where he actually came from in Ireland. This is proven to be a real headache for me, and after 3 years have really got no further in finding out.

Hi Malshie,

He is indexed as Simon Lurker on Ancestry 1871 index. If you view the image it is clearly him. He is living at 11 Henry Street, Yarrow, aged 27, occ Iron Worker, born Ireland. Also there is wife Mary, aged 22 born Durham,South Shields.

Oh Isabelc, Thank you so much, you truly are a star don`t know how you find my g.g.grandfather, but you have, I never thought he would be under a different surname Lurker - Larkin! and living in Yarrow - Jarrow! someone definately been at the whisky bottle.

At the moment I do not have membership to Ancestry, so a big big thankyou to you, only one thing don`t suppose it gave a county in Ireland on the original transcript? Now that would be the answer to my prayers.
