Hunnam/Donaldson

Post by maple23 » Wed Mar 14, 2007 2:27 pm

It's me again, sorry for troubling you but I would really appreciate your assistance again please.

I am trying to find parental info on William Hunnam and his wife Jane Donaldson from East Lothian. Their names appear on the marriage certificate of their son Thomas to Ellen (Helen) Ross on 6 December 1878 but I can't find their births or marriage anywhere else.

The only one I can find on SP is:

05/08/1753 HUNNAM WILLIAM - which was too early
ROBERT HUNNAM/JEAN SCOTT
Canonbie /DUMFRIES

Thanks

ok, I have found the death certificate of a William Hownam, Cockenzie who died in 1860, which could be him. I am not good at reading joined up writing at the best of time but the writing on the certificate is hard to decipher, for me anyway.

I can't find him on the 1851 Census, why is this?

Sorry, if I am asking a daft question

Hi

Following on from Davids comments I had a look for Hunnam as you have spelled it and it is an extremely uncommon name.
I found one William Hownam marrying a Jane Simpson c 1853 in Glasgow.
another, more likely, was William Hownam marrying Isabella Hillstane in 1852 in Duns, Berwick.
There is a fair possibility that the name has been mis-transcribed on certificates and census entries making it more difficult to pin down.

There was only one Hunnam entry on the 1861 census in the whole of Scotland.
For my search I tried W*m H*n*m and found 2 in Tranent in 1851, probably father and son as 1 is aged 39 and the other aged 14.
Under Hownam. Knowing the local accent it would not surprise me if that was the way the name was recorded.
Hope these are the correct folks. Worth a look anyway.

Hi maple23,

There are no daft questions on TS  You should read some of the ones I've asked

Why don't you upload the DC and we'll see if we can decipher it for you?
