Post by djcrtoye » Thu Mar 15, 2007 5:57 pm

When did all the men get the right to vote, reason is depending on the answer to this post I going to search voters rolls to see if I can find the year of my ggggranda death. I know he died some time between 1851 -1861 so thats my start and finsh date.

Thanks

In 1884 most men got the vote but there was still a property qualification. It looks as though full adult male suffrage was not achieved until 1918 along with votes for women aged over 30 (by which time we have got a little wisdom!!)

My memory was that all men got the vote in the 1870s but obviously having looked it up I was wrong about the extent of the reforms at that time.

Researching M(a)cKenzie, McCammond, McLachlan, Kerr, Assur, Renton, Redpath, Ferguson, Shedden, Also Oswald, Le/assels/Lascelles, Bonning just for starters

From my raking the web, I find the following ages for voting in the UK.

1884 - any male occupying land or property with an annual rateable value of £10 could vote. 24 adults out of every 100 could vote.
1918 - all men over 21 and women over age 30 got the right to vote
1928 - womens' voting age reduced to 21 (same as men)
1969 - voting age reduced to 18

Pre-1884, even fewer had the right to vote.

All the best,
