ANYONE HEARD OF MACDUFFIE

Post by wini » Mon Mar 26, 2007 11:13 am

My B-I-L sent me a book on Tartans.
I already have a couple.
This one says under MacFie may also be known as MacPhie, MacPhee or MacDuffie
It doesn't mention the Mc's and I have never heard of the MacPhies of any spelling being called macDuffie
Mind you it says uner the Gunns that they come from Caithness and SUNDERLAND

Is there any point in me looking for missing MacPhies under Macduffie

If you Google "MacDuffie Clan" it certainly seems to come up with a lot of studies and researchers who do link these names. One result even mentioned the McAfee spelling as well as Mahaffey and a few others! The interesting thing is that many of these seem to be written by McPhees (assorted spellings) .

As to the Mc / Mac thing; My MacDonald lot have been found on SP with both spellings. Rule of thumb when searching is to use the wildcard I only managed to find my grandmother's BC with M*cDonald because it was registered without the "a", even though she had included it all her life - insisted on it in fact!

McDonald or MacDonald (some couldn't make up their mind!), Bonner, Crichton, McKillop, Campbell, Cameron, Gitrig (+other spellings), Clark, Sloan, Stewart, McCutcheon, Ireland (the surname)

In the period 1855 to 1956 there were 5 deaths registered in Scotland with the surname MACDUFFIE.

I'll have a squizzy at SP just in case.
Found a family on the IGI called MacPhie MacDuffie in Mississipi in the 18th Century born Skye.
Don't think they are mine but it must have been a culture shock going from Skye to Mississipi
