Dalziel name

Post by trish1 » Mon Apr 02, 2007 12:28 am

I have been doing some research for a friend and one branch of her family has the name Dalziel - from the Shetlands.

The only way I have heard the name pronounced is as per the books/TV series as DeeL but others in Oz pronounce it very differently. Could I have advice on how it is pronounced in Scotland

many thanks

Trish

Hi Trish,

I would agree with your pronounciation for Dalziel - Dee-Ell, or similarly Dee'yell.

All the best,

See http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/4595228.stm for the background, - the yogh ................ (There's a comment that the y in "ye" as in "Ye Olde" also due to a yogh, - nope, - that's a thorn ! - for what they actually looked like, see http://www.scottishhandwriting.com/cont ... ?page=s4_3 )

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dalziel gives an even more detailed orthographic background !
