Hi
Re my query Looking for Effie
Further to the information about Effie`s son George Nelson Colven

I have confirmation that this is correct, I have obtained the birth information from the Scotspeople site, and printed out the certificate, unfortunately it is a bit difficult to read being a bit faded in the writing, but the relevant information is all there, and yes he is indeed my great aunt Effie`s child.

Shame that the cert is marked "illegitimate" a bit cruel do`nt you think, especially when the father was present to give his name, however, such was the thinking of the powers that be in those times!

My main task now is to follow this up and hopefully trace where and when she died in Canada.
I`m also hoping and praying that the son has left descendants, there must be some somewhere

My mother had a visit from her cousin, shortly after WW2 (his name was Charlie Herd) and fortunately for me they had mentioned some surnames during their conversation at the dinner table, these remained in my memory and were very helpful when I began to research my family.
Especially as mother never told me anything about the family or the past, she had even lied about where she was born, saying that it had been Saskatchewan, when it was actually in Ontario.

I know I had who I believe was a cousin there named Eleanor, but I never knew her surname, we would write to each other and she used to arrange to send me clothes from a catalogue, stating that they were used clothing to avoid paying tax on them, and would send me coloured nylon stockings one in each envelope that arrived. My mother was the one who addressed and posted my letters so I never saw the information about surname or address.

I now have some hope that I can try and find out if there any descendants
from Effie`s son, and perhaps she may even have married again and had more children.

Once again I send my grateful thanks for the information you have sent me, I was so thrilled to receive it.

Hi Maud:

That's good news for you! If you'd like to post the certificate to TalkingScot gallery, perhaps someone can give you a hand in reading it. You could also contact ScotlandsPeople through their website, about the unclear copy and they'll send a photocopy.

Maud
(his name was Charlie Herd)
I finally got into www.collectionscanada.ca - and the passenger list for ths SS Mongolian is available to view ! - you just have to scroll through all the pages till you find them ( Page 8 if you want to take the direct route ) .
This gives the same info as the outward list - but also confusingly gives place of birth for both Effie and George as Midlothian . I didn't let that stop me trying to find them on the census - which I initially failed to do.
But on the same site are all the WW1 Canadian soldier's attestation papers - Seeing George's age I reckoned he might have enlisted - to cut a long story short , you won't find him as George Nelson Colven, but if you search only for people with the forenames GEORGE NELSON, there is a George Nelson HERD with the same birthdate as George Nelson Colven, and on opening his file, you can see that he was born in Glasgow and his mother was Mrs EFFIE HERD of Bounty P.O. , Saskatchewan !

So it does look like Effie married a Mr Herd - Charles could be her son !

Should be easier to find them on the 1911 census now . THere was also a 1906 census for Saskatchewan ( thanks Frances for figuring out where Lumsden was/is ) - if you're really lucky, we might find them there too.

I just noticed that the person on the line before Effie on the manifest was Charles Herd , age 26, Ploughman , destination Winnipeg .

Did romance blossom on the North Atlantic ?

Effie Colven

Hi
Thank you so much for your very kind efforts to help me, I am truly grateful.

I`m so thankful to at last have found out just who Charlie Herd was!
His visit to us after WW2 had been so short, and I recall that my mother had not been too pleased about it either. I think now she must have been afraid that he would reveal any of the secrets that were hidden!

I had understood that he was her cousin, but now it looks as though the relationship was through marriage (to Effie) I am now also wondering who the Eleanor was that I had been writing to after Charlie returned to Canada, she could have been his daughter. I never knew her surname or address, my mother would address and post the envelope, and all mail arriving at our house, was first opened by my mother

I never knew why the correspondence had ceased, most likely by my mother I`m sure, she was obviously afraid we might find anything out!
Charlie Herd had asked if my brother could go to Canada with him for a visit, probably for a few weeks or months, but mother firmly refused to allow him to go (he was 18 years old at that time!)

I now know that there is at present a George N.Colvin still living in Sask.
and I obtained the t/phone number on the net, but unfortunately it appears to have been disconnected, I was soooo disappointed at being unable to contact him, especially with Nelson as the middle name, he
must
be connected

Still, I will keep on trying to find him or anyone else who may know or be a Colven, hopefully before I myself fall off my perch!

Thank you once again for all your help, I am so grateful.
I will ask my son to try and post the copy of the cert. I do not have a clue how to do anything like that I`m afraid, hopefully other people may be able to decipher it better than I can.

Must close now and have a wee rest, will be back again soon, I have some more work yet to do, so must try and conserve my energy.
Cheerio for now.
