Galloway's

Post by Clannessie » Wed Apr 11, 2007 12:36 am

Not sure if this is the forum I need to ask this. Can someone do a census lookup on the early years for:

Thomas Galloway born 1813, Mid Calder, Midlothian

James Galloway born 1814, same as above

Robert Galloway, born 1824, Glasgow, Lanark

I can't do the daughters since I have no clue what would be married names but if by chance:

Elizabeth born 1809 Alloa

Mary born 1809 Ediburgh Parish

Jean born 1811, Mid Calder (later became a Young and have that info)

Janet born 1819, Glasgow

Helen born 1829, Hamilton

Parents were Thomas and Elizabeth Campbell Galloway, and I have no clue when they were born. We think Elizabeth was from Jura but so far that is just a story. They were married in Stirling in 1807 and had thier first daughter christened in Alloa, Clackmannan.....maybe Thomas now worked there or "his" family was there (since part of the story goes that Elizabeth ran off with the gardener or his son - so she wouldn't or couldn't go home?)

IF Thomas the father is on any of the early census records...I would LOVE to know just what his occupation is!!!! :)

Silly Question but how far back do the records for the census go for Scotland?

Hi Karen,

1801, but...

The censuses of 1801 to 1831 are headcounts only and generally not considered to be useful to genealogists. A very few sporadic census reports with names exist, particularly in parts of Orkney (1821, if I recall correctly).

1841 is the first census considered to be useful to genealogists. The censuses of 1841 to 1901 are available on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk on a pay per view basis. 1881 is transcriptions only. Digitised images of the census enumeration pages are available for the rest. More detailed information is available on the census tab at the top of this forum page.

All the best,

Hi Karen,

A parent search on the online IGI gives one more child to add to your list - Margaret, born in 1822.

ELIZABETH GALLOWAY - Birth 17 DEC 1807; Christening: 27 DEC 1807 Alloa, Clackmannan
MARY GALLOWAY - Birth: 10 JUL 1809 Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian
JEAN GALLOWAY - Birth: 04 AUG 1811 Mid Calder, Midlothian
THOMAS GALLOWAY - Birth: 29 MAR 1813 Mid Calder, Midlothian
JAMES GALLOWAY - Birth: 02 OCT 1814 Mid Calder, Midlothian
JANET GALLOWAY - Birth: 18 AUG 1819 Glasgow, Lanark
MARGARET GALLOWAY - Birth: 18 AUG 1822 Glasgow, Lanark
Robert Gallaway - Birth: 04 OCT 1824 Glasgow, Lanark (LDS submission)
HELEN GALLOWAY - Christening: 09 AUG 1829 Hamilton, Lanark

The OPR entries for each of these should be available on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk and some of these may show the father's occupation.

Note that Robert's surname is spelled Galloway on ScotlandsPeople, but Gallaway on the IGI (LDS submission).

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Karen,

Helen Galloway, age 11 shows up in the 1841 census in Hamilton - should be worth a look to see if this is the family you are seeking.

All the best,

Hmm..that will teach me to count heads before I send something...yes I knew about Margaret :)

I have copies of Elizabeth's, Jean's and Helen's birth records...no mention what so ever of an occupation :( Why I am hoping on the census it will be there.

Thanks for all your help

Hi Karen,
Noo, wid ye clock the time here in The Sou'side.
Up in the mornin's the gemme right enough.
Ah'll tell ye sumphin', aw this sobriety lark isnae aw it's cracked up tae be,
Yer Man wiz a baker by trade, at least that is his occupation in 1819, when Janet wiz born.
At one time I wasnae sure if it was Janet or Jean that Andrew Young married.
As on their daughter's marriage she has her mother as Janet Garroway.
I wondered if the registrar was Chinese.

Editit: it is actually 07:22 in Glesga.

Too funny Davie :) You'd think if the family name WAS Garroway those rrrr's would have come out very strong, making it the correct spelling...but lll"s??? oh well

Yes, Jean - Janet -or even Margaret as her 2nd daughter Jane, called her...then am sure you could also had the name Jane in there geez!!!

But with Jack's help I "think"...key word still being "think" I have decided it was Jean and not her later sister Janet who is my Galloway relative (least until another theory comes up!)

Looks like the senior Thomas Galloway was a baker. Someone else found his son's Robert's record and it had his dad's occupation on it..I will have to look at that next time I go on Scotlandspeople. Seems another son, James, was also a baker...and I had that view of the 1841 census all along but I had no clue it was his dad's occupation.

So...it seems for now the family story of Thomas Galloway being a gardener is out the window.

I am still waiting to hear your "other" info 'on Helen Cooper and any more info you have on the Young family :)

Hello Karen

All the best in your searching for your Galloways.
My lot or at least my William got around a bit with his family they were born in a few different places. Although his occupation seemed to be reasonably consistent except for a few variations in descriptions. :D
