Cracked It!
I said
He seems to have got his middle name from Margaret Ross's mother, Isobel Guthric (there's that spelling variation again). Margaret married a Craik and one of their daughters married a Young.
Got it sorted now!
John Girtrig Young's GG Grandmother, Margaret Craik married James Young.
Margaret's BROTHER Charles married Margaret Ross whose mother's maiden name was Guthric, deviated from her family name Girtrig.
So John Girtrig Young got his middle name from his Grandfather's Auntie by marriage's mother!
I did say it was a bit convoluted, didn't I

So, unless any of James Young/Margaret Craik's descendants married a cousin from the Charles Craik/Margaret Ross line, he isn't related to me.
It has also solved the mystery about where the middle name Ross came from in my grandmother's line!
