Hi again
Grateful for your help trying to establish the birth and location of Thomas Hunnam.
I can find the dates of birth of all his siblings except one (James b. c1852). I have searched SP and IGI but can't find the actual date. He appears on the Census from 1851 onwards until his death in 1890. I found his siblings with the spelling of Hownam but the spelling on his MC and DC (and newspaper cuttings) is shown as Hunnam - he doesn't appear on SP or IGI under either name (unless I am missing something).
This is what I have on him:
THOMAS HUNNAM/HOWNAM
Parents: William Hunnam/Hownam & Jane Donaldson
Birth Date: Abt 1855
Place: Cockenzie, East Lothian
Death Date: 7 November 1890
Place: In the North Sea, 28 miles off Yarmouth
Place: Drowned with some of his brothers on the fishing boat 'The Brothers'
Occupation: Fisherman
Married: Helen Ross
Date: 06 December 1878
Place: Church of Scotland, Cockenzie, East Lothian
Children: 7 – Helen, William, David, Jane, Annie, Margaret, Thomas
Also:
James Hunnam (brother)
Born: Abt. 1852
Place: Cockenzie, East Lothian
Any help will be much appreciated.
Regards

Thanks for this Jack, it looks like it is belongs.
I have just done another search for Thomas with various spellings of Hunnam without success. How can there be no record of this man's birth but there is info on his marriage and death, especially when his older siblings are all accounted for?

Hi Maple,
This from the BIVR (British Isles Vital Records) CD.
Maybe order in the film at your local LDS Family History Centre?
But i'd have thought it would also be on SP?
Have you tried *wildcards* ?

Re: Pesky Hunnams again
On SP I tried wildcards H*n* and *n*m to no useful avail for the whole of East Lothian, for OPRs (1854) and statutory birth registrations (1855).
Do the BIVR CDs include non-conformist church records that are not available on SP? For that era within Tranent Parish, the only records that I can see listed are baptisms in Tranent Free Church (1843-1888) in CH3/561 in NAS, and filmed by the LDS (film #0889488, indexed on film #6084809).
All the best,
AndrewP

Re: Pesky Hunnams again
Andrew the Film Notes from The LDS say that they are Church of Scotland records.
I believe I know why Thomas Hunan doen't appear on SP.
The Tranent OPR records are indexed by christening date not birth date on SP.
You cannot enter a christening date for 1855 into the search screen !
On the IGI online there are 4 females born in 1854 in Tranent, but baptised in 1855 :
Results for: Any Event, 1855, British Isles
Exact Spelling: Off
Batch Number: C117228
[refine search]
Prepare selected records for download
International Genealogical Index / British Isles - 4
Select records to download - (50 maximum)
1. MARGARET GREIG - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 1855 Tranent, East Lothian, Scotland
2. ALISON HOGG - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 04 JAN 1855 Tranent, East Lothian, Scotland
3. CHRISTINA NEIL - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 14 JAN 1855 Tranent, East Lothian, Scotland
4. ELIZABETH RUTHERFORD - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 10 JAN 1855 Tranent, East Lothian, Scotland
I can't find these girls on SP. However a random selection from the 1854 baptisms are on SP - indexed by baptism date.
Maple , I hope I am not being hopelessly confusing here , but I think you should consider sending a contact form . Perhaps Andrew or DavidWW or someone else who knows more about SP and GROS indexing than I do could confirm whether my suspicion is true first ?

Re: Pesky Hunnams again
Hi Sally,
I think you are on to something there. There will be a small group of people who were born in 1854 (or possibly earlier) who were baptised in 1855 (or possibly later). They may appear on the OPRs, but are ignored by SP, as SP uses only statutory births from 1st January 1855, and mostly baptisms up to 31st December 1854.
The only reliable way that I can think of to find this elusive group of people is using the BIVR CDs or a full IGI index (be careful with the online version of the IGI as it omits male births in many parishes). If they can be found in these sources, then the record can be seen by viewing the OPR microfilm.
All the best,
AndrewP
