How do I find Opr Births Skye

Post by wini » Wed Apr 18, 2007 2:48 am

I have started this as new thread. I was going to add it to the previous one on this topic but didn't want to confuse everyone, it's bad enough me being confused.

I have some information from the Free Church of Scotland

"The people in Kilmuir who formed the Free Church congregation here were the first of a revival movement, conducted by Blind Donald Munro, which began at Kilmuir about 1812.
They separated from the Established church and ultimately in a body joined the Free Church after the Disruption."

My question is does that mean that from 1812 memebers of this congregation would not be recorded on the OPR's?

Almost certainly they would not be on the OPRs as these are the records only of the established Church of Scotland. You might find that some people continued to have baptisms and marriages recorded in the Established Church but in general they won't.

Some of the records of the seceding churches are on the LDS BVRI discs or if you know someone going to the National Archives of Scotland they may be willing to look and see if there are records from that congregation there.

Anne
Thank you for that I was quite surprised to find that there was a Free church in Skye from 1812.
I thought the Free Church didn't emerge until the Disruption
My Scottish History is sadly lacking, my school history, even although I was at school until my highers, doesn't seem to have any church history in the curriculum.
Lots of Battles though!!!
Ask me any question about Scottish Battles. Once in an exam paper, in the days when exam papers said at the top, Marks will be deducted for Bad Spelling, Bad Puctuation and writing which is difficult to read.
I was asked about some battle and I had a complete memory loss and wrote "The battle of ?? was fought" The History teacher wrote on the paper "Fancy that now'

Surely we didn't have the same teacher?

My effort was "We fought the English somewhere. We won". Her response? "That's a relief!"

I doubt if it was the same teacher as I am much older than you, but it is good to see I wasn't the only student with memory blanks and teachers had a sense of humour.
