Where was she born?

Post by Brenda » Mon Apr 23, 2007 2:56 am

In the 1841 /51 /61 Census records it states that Janet McCracken [ nee McCreadie] dgt. of John & Janet McCreadie [ nee Fergie,] wife of John McCracken, was born abt 1880 Ballantrae AYR

However, the IGI 1822 marriage record between Janet McCreadie and James Vint says she was born in Glasgow?

Her death cert. Dec 27th 1873 gives her age as only 66 , widow of 1. James Vint. 2 John McCracken

Her daughter Helen Vint, appears in all the Census.

Apart from the obvious age discrepancy on her death cert why would the Census show her birthlace as Ballantrae, yet the MC to James Vint shows her born Glasgow.

Do you think I have the correct Janet McCreadie?

Brenda

Just be aware that the IGI 1822 marriage is an LDS submission so caution may be necessary.

Hi Brenda,
Glad to see you haven't thrown your hands up in despair over this family yet! Here's another thought: Helen Vent (spelled like that) died in the City Poorhouse in Glasgow on 15 August 1875, age 50. Parents given are James Vent and Janet Vent M.S. McCready, both deceased. Given the amount of wonderful information that can sometimes come from the Poorhouse applications, it might be worth taking a look, next time Some Kind Soul goes to the Mitchell Library. No guarantee, but you just might get that one tidbit of information that makes it all come together :D
All the best,
Sarah

Hi Brenda,
Re the 1822 marriage in the IGI for James VINT & Janet McCREADIE.
You'll have noticed that it was "about 1822, Glasgow" - no definite date.
Likewise for Janet's birth of "about 1802 Glasgow"
As Stewie mentions, you sometimes have to treat LDS submissions with caution.
Many though do have correct and excellent info.

But in this case the submitter probably presumed Janet was born Glasgow because she most likely married there.
(Maybe the Glasgow births of children Helen Vint 1824 & James Vint 1825 had an influence on that thought)
It would seem that there was never any in-depth search for Janet in later years (ie - the censuses).
You've got Janet 1841 as born Ayrshire, 1851 & 1861 as born Ballantrae.
So it's a very good chance that Janet was born in Ballantrae, and not Glasgow!

As Sarah said, no harm in looking for a Poor Relief record; especially when someone dies in the Poorhouse.
Just a short one this, and doesn't give much more than you already know of Helen.
Poor soul, for some reason now blind. Possibly caused by some illness?

Hi Jack,
Poor soul indeed. I wonder what happened to her illegitimate son? Perhaps he died young also-- the last we found him with her was in 1871, age 15. She died just 4 years later of a cerebral hemorrhage at only 50 years old.

Thanks for looking that up-- sad though it is
Regards,
Sarah

Hi Jack

Thank you so much for looking that up, I felt rather sad when I read it, and wondered why her half brother John didn't have her stay with him..but then he had young children, his first wife had died , who knows what circumstances led to this such a sad end for this young woman.

The data you provided confirms that I am at least on the right track with this frustrating family, as there is a mention of 20 Stockwell Place which was the address on the marriage certificate for Janet's son, John McCracken's 2nd marriage to Elizabeth Gibben June 1874 and where Janet died Dec 27th 1873

Thanks again

Brenda
