Joseph Law s w scotland

Post by perseus » Mon Apr 23, 2007 11:47 am

 Trying to find Joseph Law ( might be John), supposedly a Lord & a bishop!!
It's said that he lived in the Law mansion in s.w. scotland. His son Joseph born c 1770 married the family servant, Olive from Ireland who was catholic. They subsequently left the family home and settled in Sedgley Staffordshire.
Joseph & Olive are real, but what about the rest ???

Any help appreciated

Hi perseus,
Welcome to Talking Scot! :D
What kind of solid information do you have about Joseph and Olive? It would help to know exactly where the documented data stops and the speculation starts! Then maybe we can find something...
All the best,
Sarah

Hi Sarah

Answered your queries the wrong way round!

Here's what facts i have.

I have baptisms for children of Joseph & Olive Law in Sandwellfields Staffordshire from 1799 to 1814. I have traced some of them and their families.
I have a death for Olive Law in 1819 in Stafforshire.aged 49. I have a copy of the marriage between Joseph & Elisabeth Harriman, and baptisms for their children from stat records beginning. As you know none for Sarah Jane or Mary, or for their 1st son Joseph born in Wolverhampton 1836ish.

I have lots of info through censues & church records , all after they returned to England.

I tried looking for a Joseph Law, lord & bishop ( how likely is that?) but haven't found anything. S W Scotland is rather a large area to cover.
I did think if that info was correct It would jump out at me.
The person who 'found' this information lived in Canada and died before I was able to talk to him. If there is no truth in what he passed on where did he 'dream it up'.

There was a suggestion that the a the Law name is connected to the McLawrie/McLaurie clan

Again don't know if this is of any help.

I did think I should visit the records office in Glasgow when I next visit my friend there, but where would I begin? From experience I know that searches can be interminably long and not always productive.

Or I answered yours the wrong way round

If you are going to Glasgow, it would be worth a trip to Edinburgh to check out the Scottish Catholic Archives and the Catholic holdings at NAS. See http://www.catholic-heritage.net/archives.htm

If you contact them first, you should be able to get a good idea of what there is and where it is to be found, so you won't waste too much time when you are there.

Cheers,
Sarah
