In 1998 I visited Blairgowrie, Scotland to try and find more about my 3rd
Great Grandfather David Ogilvie born 1777 in Lintrathen, Angus. Married
first Barbara Wilkie 11 April 1813, second Barbara Anderson 12 October
1823.
Family legend has it that he was the proprietor the Blairgowrie Hotel.
Enquiries at the Meadow Arms Hotel regarding the Blairgowrie Hotel and
the name Ogilvy revealed that the Blairgowrie Hotel no longer existed and
the Meadows Arms Hotel was formerly called the Ogilvy Arms Inn.
Fortunately, there was a historical board in the back room of "The
Meadows Arms" Hotel with an inscription that read -
"David Ogilvy. Formerly of Island of Jamacia, latterly of Shithey, Forfar.
1812. Blairgowrie pop 940"
and
"Premises named Ogilvy Arms Inn until C 1955 then renamed Meadows
Arms"
Searches for "Shithey" have so far failed to find it. Can anyone suggest
where it is?
I have uploaded an enlarged image of the inscription for David Ogilvy and
an image of the whole board for anyone interested in the other names that
are listed.

Any further information regarding David Ogilvy (Ogilvie) or the Ogilvy
Arms Hotel would be appreciated.

Hello David,
Have you tried the Mitchell for any further clues on the "Arms Hotel?"

This is from the 1881 census. I wonder if this is the place?

I'm sure you will be able to locate it on an old county map at the NLS site but it seems to be down at the moment.
I had a scout round old maps but no luck.
Kind regards,

Ogilvy Blairgowrie Hotel
Hello Marilyn, Andrew and Annette
Thank you for replying to my post regarding my 3rd Great Grandfather David Ogilvie born 1777 in Lintrathen, later residing in Blairgowrie.
Marilyn - Yes, I had tried the Mitchell Library, but so far no luck. I will explore it further.
Andrew - I didn't know of the “A K Bell Library” and can see it has much to explore and have made a start.
Annette - When I read your reply I immediately thought the David Ogilvy you found, born about 1814, was the son of my 3rd Great Grandfather David Ogilvie as he had a son David born same year, same place.
I then worked my way back through the Census, but when I got to the 1851 Census I found his father was recorded as John not David.
All was not lost; I then found that my 3rd Great Grandfather David Ogilvie had a brother John Ogilvy, about right place and about the right date, so I am exploring this further.
Since finding the notice board at the Meadow Arms Hotel in Blairgowrie, I was under the impression that my David Ogilvy was "latterly of Shirley, Forfar", it was only when I prepared my post to Talking Scot that I enlarged the image and found it was "latterly of Shithey, Forfar".
You have found a David Ogilvy dwelling at "Scithie" in the 1881 Census, now I have found him recorded at "Scythie" in the 1851 Census and at "Scistric" in the 1861 Census.
My 3rd Great Grandfather David Ogilvy was recorded on the notice board as “formerly of Jamaica” and now I have found a Thomas Ogilvy born in Jamaica about 1808 in the 1871 Census, maybe another son.
So you have all opened up many new avenues for me to pursue after being in the wilderness for about 20 years, thank you all very much.
Bruce

I am near enough to enjoy a trip to Blairgowrie area on a fine day. If you find out where he did come from or where he might be buried, give me a shout and I would be happy to take some photos.
