Bathgates of the Aberlady area?

Post by alysone » Sun Apr 29, 2007 10:07 pm

Hi all,
My Great Great Aunt Sophia Letitia Bird married John Bathgate in Edinburgh in 1882. Her brother, James Bird born 1862 in Tranent was my Great Grandfather. I would love to hear from any relations at TS. alysone

Hi Alysone,

I have a very teeny link with your James & Sophie. Their great-grandparents were Robert Crookston b1780 & Rosina Redpath b1777. Rosina's brother John b1778 married Janet Kinlay b1780 Tranent, who is sister of my 4th great-grandfather George Kinlay b1777 Tranent .

Cheers,
Scozzie

Hi Alysone and Scozzie

I don't have any claim to the Birds or Bathgates I'm afraid, but Robert Crookston 1780 was my 3rd great-grandfather - his second wife Marion Fairholm being my 3rd great-grandmother. Maybe some closer connections are out there?

Best wishes

Hi Panda,

We have the same Robert Crookston - 1st wife Rosina Redpath 2nd wife Marion Fairholm. I know of 3 children for Robert & Marion - William 1822, Margaret 1825 & James 1827.

Cheers,
Scozzie

Where the Crookstons met the Mormons?

Post by alysone » Sat May 05, 2007 4:58 pm

Hello Pinkshoes & Skozzy,
Robert Crookston & his 2nd wife, Marion? Isn't that where a branch of our clan headed off to Utah as newly converted Mormons? Perhaps the most intriguing segment of my research, to date. Are there other TS-ers who see that movement in their Scottish ancestors of the 1840's & 1850's? alysone

Exactly right Alysone - Robert & Marion's daughter Marion married Ralph Plain Smith, joined the Mormon church in 1850 and took off to USA in 1856. But Marion wasn't the only Crookston to go off in search of a better life. Descendents of Robert and Rosina also made the journey as Pioneers. Marion & Ralph arrived in Utah in 1860 after spending time in Iowa (not sure if that was their first port of call, but it's the first census I have for them). Eventually settled in Logan, Cache. Fascinating stuff!

Best wishes
