Hi All - Made Some Headway

Post by Miss Poohs » Fri May 04, 2007 12:47 am

but noo I'm stuck and I'm gaun roon an'roon in circles!!

Yep it's the elusive Hislops/Hyslops/McLeans again

I finally did track down one missing leg of the family to the far east - yup they'd moved off tae Edinburgh, and that is just the start of the tale!!

Sarah Hislop left her first husband (Thomas Hislop) and moved in with another Thomas, this time McLean - they went on to have 2 further daughters, but never married (to my knowledge). On Sarahs death cert she is stated as the wife of Thomas Hislop - no mention of Mr McLean.

Anyway - these 2 daughters.

I have found the birth cert for the second daughter Rebecca (1896), but try as I might I'm having no luck finding Jeanies, born approx 1894.

On the 1901 census Jeanie (Jennie) is there and is noted as being 6, I've also found her marriage cert in 1917 too, but still no birth cert.

I've tried every combo I can think of - and I'm worn oot. Can anyone suggest a new angle?

I'm beggin' here :D
Beveridge, Bonnar, Burns,Candlin, Colquhoun, Dewar,Graham,Hislop,Jackson & Robertson.
Martin & Nelson - all Liverpool
Allison, Beaton, MacLean, McLuskie & Todd.
Grant, McEwan, McLean & Syme.

Miss Poohs

Sorry this is of no help to you, my granny lived with a married man for a number of years  and had a son between them. When he died there was no mention whatsoever of my granny, only his lawful wife.

I take it from your post you've tried every name combination for Jeannie/Jean/Jane/Janet/Jessie ad infinitum  have you tried searching without a given name under Hislop or McLean or even her ms. Using a location and date spread.
Stewie

Searching for: Anderson, Balks, Barton, Courtney, Davidson, Downie, Dunlop, Edward, Flucker, Galloway, Graham, Guthrie, Higgins, Laurie, Mathieson, McLean, McLuckie, Miln, Nielson, Payne, Phillips, Porterfield, Stewart, Watson

HI Mss Poohs

I found 3 Jeannie McLeans born in Edinburgh between 1892 and 1894 on SP. I don't know if they are yours. If not, maybe your Jeanie was registered under her mothers name, or her first husbands name.

Hi Miss Poohs,

What names are they listed as in the 1901 census? And what ages and birthplaces?

All the best,

AndrewP

The details from the 1901 census are

Name: Jennie McLean
Age: 6
Estimated birth year: abt 1895
Relationship: Daur (Daughter)
Father's name: Thomas
Mother's name: Sarah
Gender: Female
Where born: Hamilton, Lanark
Registration Number: 685/2
Registration district: St Andrew
Civil parish: Edinburgh Greenside
County: Midlothian
Address: 24 Greenside Row
ED: 7
Page: 4 (click to see others on page)
Household schedule number: 30
Line: 14
Roll: CSSCT1901_371

As you can see - her birth place is Hamilton, Lanark which would tie in with the rest of the family - although due to other siblings I'd estimate her DOB to be nearer 1894 than 1895, but I haven't ruled anything out.

I have looked under Jennie, Jeanie, Jeannie and Jean, as well as mixtures of Hislop, Hyslop McLean, MacLean and MacLean.

I'll bet this is staring me in the face and I just can't see it.

Thanks for the replies everyone - you guys have a knack of helping me clear the mist :)

Hi Miss Poohs,

It might be worth searching for Janet. I searched and searched for my g auntie Jenny's birth and finally found her registered as Janet.

Kind regards,

Alison

Hi Miss Poohs

You could try Jane as well. My ggrandmother was registered at birth as Jane, but her death certificate gives her name as Jean as she had always been called Jeannie.

Hi Miss Poohs,
There are 18 j*n* m*l*n* born in Hamilton between 1893 and 1895-- none of them look good? I haven't actually checked the list, just did the search. No h*l*p* though. Have you tried under Sarah's maiden name?

Regards,
Sarah

=D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D>

She was named on her birth cert as - wait for it ................. Mary Jane McLean

Her father was indeed Thomas McLean and her mother Sarah is stated as "Sarah Jane Bonar wife of Thomas Hislop, who she declares is not the father of the child and further that she has had no personal intercourse with him for about 2 years."

I'll sleep better tonight :D
