McKillops of Kilmore and Kilbride

Post by d.mackechnie » Sun May 13, 2007 12:48 pm

Looking for any information on Ann and Margaret McKillop.
Ann McKillop was christened December 1829 in Kilmore.
Margaret was christened on 10 March 1836 in Kilmore.
There parents where Peter McKillop and Janet McArthur, looking to find if either or both of the girls married or when they died, have looked on S.P. with no luck, any help would be appreciated, might help solve a conundrum we have. Thanks.

Hi there

Not sure I've got something concrete here and I need to go out so have to put further looking on hold.

This appears to be your family with wee Margaret but no Ann in 1841

Name: Peter McKillop
Age: 35
Estimated birth year: abt 1806
Gender: Male

Civil parish: Kilbride
County: Argyll
Address: Dunollybeg
Occupation: Ag Lab
Parish Number: 523

Household Members:
Alexander McKillop 5
Archd McKillop 8
Catharine McKillop 14
Duncan McKillop 6 Mo
Flora McKillop 2
Janet McKillop 30
Margt McKillop 3
Peter McKillop 35

and this is surely Janet the mum with daughter Flora in 1881 based on Janet's DC there in 1884....

Janet MC KILLOP W 78 F Ling, Argyll, Scotland

so a search for the Davies family in earlier years turns up them indexed as Danes in 1861.......but with a sister in law named Margaret McColl.

Name: Flora Danes
Age: 22
Estimated birth year: abt 1839
Relationship: Wife
Spouse's name : Edward
Gender: Female
Where born: Oban, Argyle
Registration Number: 625/2
Registration district: Holytown
Civil parish: Bothwell
County: Lanarkshire
Address: Johnstonshall Parish Road
ED: 6
Page: 2 (click to see others on page)
Household schedule number: 13
Line: 20
Roll: CSSCT1861_92
Household Members: Name Age
Edward Danes 34
Flora Danes 22
Janet Danes 5
John Danes 3
Janet McColl 1
Margaret McColl 24

but a search for the birth of wee Janet McColl to see who her parents were turns up a red herring that doesn't fit!!! Margaret is listed as a Seamans Wife on this census and wee Janet is listed as born Bothwell while Margaret is born Oban. I think it's Flora's sister Margaret don't you?

Will return later....

Best wishes
Jean

yup...it sure looks like the DC of your missing Margaret.....

Bets wishes

Thanks for looking, it may well be Margarets DC, you showed the 1841 census, on it , it shows a Catherine McKillop, does it show the relationship to Peter and Janet, as we have no record of her being their child. Thanks

McKillops of Kimore and Kilbride

Post by d.mackechnie » Mon Jun 04, 2007 5:54 pm

Thanks Jean, have managed to find wee Janet McColl, she was born Jessie, Margaret was Floras sister, finding wee Janet throws up another problem, in the 1861 census for Kilmore and Kilbride, living with Margarets parents is a Mary McColl, aged 1, wether this is wee Janets twin sister I dont know, unable to find wee Marys birth, another conclusion is that Margarets sister Ann, also married a McColl, but I dont think so, in the 1871 census for Kilmore and Kilbride there is a Mary listed aged 11, but her name then is McEachnie, wether Margarets sister Mary with her husband Donald McEachern adopted her I dont know, there is a record of wee Janet in the Glasgow Poorhouse for 1871, I have no record of either Janet or Mary after 1871.

Cant decide wether this is confusing or exciting LOL.

Thanks.

Hello AMS52 and [TS_welcome]
d.mackechnie hasn't been on the forum since 2009 :( but perhaps if the email address hasn't changed, a notification of your post will reach your distant cousin! If you don't hear back within a week or so, you might try sending a PM.

All the best,
Sarah
